Grandmother pleads guilty in New York drug ring case

A little grandmother has pleaded guilty for her role in a big New York drug ring.

Doris Smith, 71, was arrested in February with 34 other defendants in a drug ring bust in Harlem, according to an indictment from the New York County District Attorney's Office. She was charged with conspiracy, criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal sale of a controlled substance.

She pleaded guilty to the two felony counts of conspiracy and criminal possession Wednesday, according to court documents.

According to the indictment, Smith, who's also known as Ms. Dot, was packaging and storing the drugs PCP, cocaine and heroin in a building in Harlem. She helped other members of a drug organization by buying rubber gloves to package the PCP and warning organization leaders when police were in the building, the indictment said.

The arrests were made after a 15-month investigation led by the New York Police Department's Narcotics Borough Manhattan North and the District Attorney's Office, according to a news release. The investigation began after complaints about neighborhood drug activity.

Smith will be sentenced in October.

My kindergarten-aged daughter suddenly announced just before school that she needed to take a clean tee shirt to class. She told us the teacher was going to iron an anti-drug message on it.

My wife frantically swept through my daughter's room, finding nothing usable but one tee shirt that already had something printed on one side. She sent it off to school with my daughter. That afternoon, my daughter returned and happily showed off her shirt.

On one side it said, "Families are Forever."

And on the other, "Be Smart, Don't Start."
