Protesters climb U.S. Embassy walls in Cairo

[Updated at 5:38 p.m. ET] Angry protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday and tore down the American flag, apparently in protest of a film thought to insult the Prophet Mohammed.

A volley of warning shots were fired as a large crowd gathered around the compound, said CNN producer Mohammed Fahmy, who was on the scene, though it is not clear who fired the shots.

Egyptian police and army personnel have since formed defensive lines around the facility in an effort to prevent the demonstrators from advancing farther, but not before the protesters affixed their standard atop the embassy.

The black flag, which hangs atop a ladder inside the compound, is adorned with white characters that read, "There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger," an emblem often used in al Qaeda propaganda.

It was unclear which film upset the protesters.

    Being angry at us for a Dutch film is like being angry at Iraq because a Saudi from Afghanistan attacked ... oh, wait, never mind.

      @TOLDYA

      Perhaps you're no more intelligent than the protesters attacking Americans for a Dutch film, but you DO know this has nothing to do with Obama, right? I'm sure your 7th grade Republican education probably can't understand that concept, but let's just try to focus on what's ACTUALLY going on in this story...

    OK. They assaulted the US embassy over a Dutch film. Can anyone whatsoever make out what is going on in their minds right now? That makes no sense whatsoever.

      I thought Obozo was going to make all the Muslims love the US
      Which could be quite a feat, since he doesn't even love the US

      It is about time we stop trying to instigate people in the middle east over religious beliefs which to them is obviously way sacred. Can we not just respect that and leave it alone? Why always try and instigate perfectly time it on 911? Only one country in the middle east benefits from the negative image by such protests as in the Egypt ... and that country is not Egypt, Jordan, Syria or Palestine but their immediate *neighbor*. We know which country that is... but that isn't helping any nation even the one nation seeking to demonize all but themselves in the region.

      in civilized nations like India with a diverse religion and ethnic mix, the democracy works by up holding religion highly and making sure it is AGAINST the law to demonize or vilify a religion or its prophets/Gods etc. hence the peace there since this rule came into effect.
