Farmer eaten by his own hogs

Authorities in Oregon are investigating how a hog farmer was eaten by his animals.

The remains of Terry Vance Garner, 70, were found in his hog enclosure Wednesday, according to local news reports Monday.

The farmer had gone to feed the hogs, some weighing as much as 700 pounds, about 7:30 a.m., according to a report from CNN affiliate KMTR. After Garner was not seen for several hours, a family member went to check on him and found his dentures in the hog pen. Other remains were found, but the hogs had eaten most of the farmer, according to the report.

The sheriff's department is looking into the death.

"Due to the unusual circumstances, the Sheriff's Office is investigating to determine if foul play may have resulted in the death of Mr. Garner," Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier told CNN affiliate KVAL.

“For all we know, it was a horrific accident, but it’s so doggone weird that we have to look at all possibilities,” the Eugene Register-Guard quoted Frasier as saying.

Garner could have suffered a heart attack and fallen in the pen, or the hogs could have knocked him off his feet and then eaten him, Frasier told the newspaper.

The state of the remains made determining a cause of death difficult, according to the news reports. They had been sent to the University of Oregon and examined by a forensic anthropologist, the report said.

The farmer's brother, Michael Garner, told the Register-Guard that one of the sows had bitten the farmer last year after he accidentally stepped on a piglet.

“He said he was going to kill it, but when I asked him about it later, he said he had changed his mind,” Garner said.

Garner told the Register-Guard his brother was a Vietnam veteran who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. The farm was "a life-saver," he said.

“Those animals were his life,” Garner told the Register-Guard.

Actually, hogs will eat just about anything. This is what hogs do. No surprise here.

This is one of the reasons why raising hogs is such an "efficient" converter of plant (also garbage) to protein. They are much more efficient than say bovines, which are much pickier. In Las Vegas, there are huge recycling businesses that take all of the garbage and waste from the casinos and restaurants, cook it down and feed it to the hungry hogs. They love it. This garbage could also be used as land-fill, but this is recycling at its best. The hogs will of course eat the garbage without cooking it down, but they do it to prevent disease transmission.

I wouldn't feel too sorry about butchering hogs and eating them. As you can see, this is their "destiny."

Hogs will eat anything including human flesh if given the chance. Sounds like they were quite hungry if they ate most of him in a matter of hours. Remember always keep the hogs well fed.

Yeah, this made me think of "Brick Top" too. And finding the farmer's dentures in the pen makes sense. Remember what Brick Top said, you gotta, "pull the teeth for the sake of the piggies' digestion." LOL

Why don't we do this to criminals? It would save millions of dollars on prison space. Once someone was convicted of a felony, they could be used for feed.

Hog can be dangerous. Sometimes they will bite you if you are not careful. If you happen to fall in a pig sty if there is a lot of them they can attack you. If you enter a pig pin you should be armed with a cattle prod to keep them off you if you slip and fall. They are still wild animals………. Have you ever heard the saying: “ He went to ____ and the hogs ate him.”

Really while this may seem strange to those not raised around hogs there are many instances in the past where a hog farmer has been killed by his pigs. One of my family's friends was mauled by one of his sows when she knocked him down and proceeded to try and rip into his neck. She got his arm instead because he was blocking his neck with it. I was very lucky he was not alone and they got the sow off of him and saved him. Pigs are very smart and can be aggressive.

ewww what a way to go. Hopefully he had a heartattack and passed instantly and I say hopefully because I am sure being ripped into by hogs does not feel too pleasant.

This man's farm is only a few miles from where I live on the South Oregon Coast. I pass it at least weekly and I have seen the hogs in their pens. I knew vicious comments and jokes were sure to come when this hit the larger media. It is too bad because this man's family is devastated as any family would be, and they still have to deal with the horrible comments made by people who have nothing better to do. What goes around comes around, folks. It might be you or yours in another situation someday.

No, they don't have to deal with the comments. They are free to completely ignore them, as well they should.
