Morocco navy escorts abortion vessel out of port, group says

[Update 10:30 p.m. ET] A ship filled with activists who say they are there to help women receive abortions was escorted out of the Moroccan port of Smir after the government initially blocked the harbor and prevented residents from accessing the vessel.

Abortion is illegal in Morocco, and the country's Health Ministry said in a statement that it had not authorized the vessel's visit or any procedures by nonresident doctors.

The "abortion ship" is run by Women on Waves, which was founded in 1999 by a Dutch doctor to provide abortions to women in countries where the practice is illegal.

The Women on Waves ship takes women into international waters to perform the abortions, which are legal under Dutch law, until 6.5 weeks into the pregnancy.

But authorities in the predominantly Muslim country seemed to effectively block the activists efforts on Thursday.

"The ship was searched, and the captains were informed that they had to leave the harbor," Women on Waves said in a statement. "When asked the reason why, they were informed that although no laws were broken, the ship had to leave Smir."

The ship was then "escorted from the harbor by the navy," though the crew plans to "stay near Morocco" and "strategize their next move."

"I will not be practicing as a gynecologist in Morocco," said Gunilla Kleiverda, a Women on Waves gynecologist aboard the vessel.  "We are not going to perform any abortions within Morocco. We are sailing out with women to international waters where in the international sea the Dutch law applies," she said.

A female member of the group told CNN that she and a number of other demonstrators had been in front of the marina in Smir. She said there was a big, aggressive protest taking place and police were present.

She said police said she was "not authorized" to be there.

"I am not going to be intimidated by them," she told CNN before the phone line dropped.

Women on Waves also advocates the use of a drug called misoprostol, which it says is available legally in Morocco, to perform abortions up to 12 weeks after conception. The group says it is establishing a phone hotline in Morocco for women to get information on how to perform the abortions at home.

Kleiverda said Moroccan women need access to safe abortions. About 90 women die from illegal abortions in the country every year, she said.

The ship has previously taken the campaign to Ireland, Poland, Portugal and Spain, but this is its first attempt to offer abortions for women in an Islamic country.

Women on Waves said on its website that it is looking into alternatives to get the ship into port in Morocco after the Smir harbor was blocked.

CNN's Stephanie Halasz, Jo Shelley and journalist Aida Alami contributed to this report.

[Original post 10:48 a.m. ET] The government of Morocco has closed the port of Smir and is blocking the harbor with warships to prevent the entry of a Dutch "abortion ship" to the Islamic country, the organization running the ship said Thursday.

Abortion is illegal in Morocco, and the country's Health Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that it had not authorized the vessel's visit or any procedures by nonresident doctors.

The abortion ship is run by Women on Waves, which was founded in 1999 by a Dutch doctor to provide abortions to women in countries where the practice is illegal.

Women on Waves doctor Marlies Schellekens told CNN that she and about 10 other members of her group and Alternative Movement for Individual Freedoms, the Moroccan activist group that invited the abortion ship to Morocco, are trying to make their way to the harbor in Smir.

The main entrance has been blocked by police; a female Moroccan lawyer representing the group is trying to negotiate with officers to let the group enter, Schellekens said. Dutch lawmaker Liesbeth van Tongeren is also with the group, she said.

The abortion ship has not yet tried to enter the port, she said.

The Women on Waves ship takes women into international waters to perform the abortions, which are legal under Dutch law, until 6.5 weeks into the pregnancy.

Gunilla Kleiverda, a Women on Waves gynecologist aboard the vessel, stressed that point in an interview with CNN on Thursday.

“I will not be practicing as a gynecologist in Morocco," Kleiverda said.

“We are not going to perform any abortions within Morocco. We are sailing out with women to international waters where in the international sea the Dutch law applies," she said.

Is it just me, or do others find it odd that just as soon as abortion was legalized, millions of women began having abortions right away. Women who prevously were doing just fine, were now aborting their own unborn babies...by the truckload.
I realize there are very rare cases where the mothers life is in peril if unborn nany isn't aborted. I speak of promiscuous women only, not all women. I realize some women feel ashamed of being rayped and simply can't stand the idea of giving life to a creamy baby, for example.
I just find it odd that the day it was legal to do it, they began doing it en mass.
Somewhere between 5 and 10 thousand abortions are performed daily in the USA alone. (over 50 million legal abortions up to 2006, 10s of millions since)
Before it was legalized, somehow we got by without it. And will again. (see my new comments on Hamas Blog for explanation.) ty

Completely agree with H. Women obtain dangerous, illegal abortions when they don't have a legal, safe alternative. When women are forced to have children they don't want or can't take care of it is the children that end up suffering. Let women choose whether they want to abort, adopt out, or keep their children. Unless it's your uterus you have no business deciding what to do with it.

As a woman, I think the two most selfish things a person can do is either have an abortion or committ suicide. These two acts show the person is selfish, selfcentered, and shallow.

I feel the same way about gay marriage. Once its fully legal in the usa, they will be lining up by the millions to get married just like they have in the states that currently allow it. They were doing just fine without it having to be legal.

You do realize that the media sensationalizes news to sway the public opinion. Just as H said, BEFORE abortion became legal (aka a witch hunt to shame women for making a choice about THEIR OWN BODIES), there were women getting abortions and inducing miscarriages LONG before that. If you actually look up Abortifacient Herbs and plants you will see there are quite a few plants that have been used (medieval times) and are used TO THIS DAY to induce a miscarriage/terminate a pregnancy. How about you worry about your body, and let us as WOMEN, worry about our bodies? It's our body, our womb, and our business!

The truth is that practically every town in America had several "places" where one could have an abortion. Which one you went to...depended upon your economic status. Plus, back in the day adoption laws were not so stringent and more churches had "homes for unwed mothers" where they gave birth "for eventual adoption. Nothing has changed. There are just new laws to accommodate a larger population. I personally believe that abortion is wrong, but until society can care for the unwanted (or inconvenient) births.....there is no good outcome.

Apparently, history is not your "thing". For millenia women have been having abortions. Men have just been UNaware of them. These "private" abortions were the cause of untold women dying. Birthing babies has always been the realm of women and ought to stay that way. No uterus, no vote.

There have been many laws made and repealed in which people "got along just fine without it". This is one of them. My question to you is what business is it of your what another person does with their body? Also if you are of the belief that there are 2 separate lives involved, are you willing to care for the children that would have been aborted?

A lot of people are willing to defend an unborn life, but how many are adopting, or volunteering as foster parents for the children that are already in this world? Do they not matter to you or do you just wait until they make a decision you don't like before becoming a part of their life?

You really are controlled 100% by that little thing between your legs, not the one between your ears apparently. Women were going abortions IN MASE before it was legalize, they were called back-alley abortions and were some of the worse conditions women had for medical care to date, yet they STILL went there when they had NO other choices.

After it was legal, most of the fear that came along with the unsanitary or unscientific work was lost, and women finally had a CHOICE over their own bodies.

Go work on yourself before you tell ANYONE else how to behave or live.

Morocco is a sovereign country and it's laws should be respected. Some of the Dutch people may disagree with the law, but it is not their country. They should maybe allow the ship into their waters then arrest them on a charge of conspiracy to commit a crime. (sorry feminazis – I am pro life ).

They are not breaking any Moroccan laws. If you board a ship in international waters, you are subject to the laws of the flag the ship flies. For example, many US cruise lines are subject to Liberian law (which is popular for notoriously lax law enforcement... good luck getting justice if you are assaulted, robbed or have a contract breached).

[It is more complicated than what I am saying, of course. Books and 1000+ page treaties are devoted to laws of the seas.]

"if you board a ship in international waters" ... No, that's not what they're doing. International waters are typically 12 miles out. They're not boarding 12 miles out. They're boarding (per the article) at the port in Morocco. Then they're taking them out to do what's illegal in that country.

It would be like this: "Here's a cocaine cruiser. We're going to pick up people from Miami, take them out to international waters and let them get as high as they want." Do you the U.S. would have a problem with this? (I'm not comparing levels of illegality)

MiichelelsHot – Your comment does not make sense. If you take a 1 year old baby and leave it alone, it will die and so on. Life does begin at conception. The definition of life does not mean life can survive without the nuturing required to live on. Even plants need water, sun, nutrients to grow and become a big plant. A womans womb provides all that for the seed of a human to become a big human. Think about it.

A baby can't survive outside the womb when carried full term and delived in a hospital. Deliver a baby and set it to the side to fend for itself and see how long it lives. The argument that you are making is asinine.

Interesting point. Let's take that approach further:
I think we all can agree that during the delivery of a child, they are most certainly alive. However, if we simply remove the child and place them in an environment where they must fend for themselves, they most certainly will die. However, were they not alive? They certainly were, it's silly to even argue the point. So what are we really talking about? The point at which life is self-sustaining? Technically, it doesn't exist. We all must consume in order to live. How about the *scientific* definition of life? Well, there are multiple criteria that must be met before something can be considered "alive" by scientific definition:
      1) Movement, 2) Respiration, 3) Sensitivity (at least one sense), 4) Growth, 5) Reproduction, 6) Excretion, 6) Nutrition

Taking a hard look at what we know about human fetal development, we can find the following:
9 Weeks: Fetus can move arms/legs independently, though limited. Organ and brain function are present, though minimal in actual operation. Respiration occurs through transfer of oxygen from mother's blood, excretion occurs through the outgoing portion of the same process. Growth continues to occur. This satisfies #'s 1, 2, 4, 6, and 7.
18 weeks: Fetus' have been show to react to bright lights or sounds directed at the womb. This satisfies #3. Additional support for excretion occurs as the development of urine forms and the fetus' intestines moves from the umbilical cord to the fetal abdomen and is discharged into amniotic fluid.
#5 is only an eventual requirement, as it is not evident in human children prior to puberty. If it were an immediate requirement, then children who have not reached puberty would not yet be considered alive by scientific measures. It is plainly obvious that by week 14 any fetus has physical traits of gender, and therefore will eventually be capable of reproduction.
As all the criteria have been met, I submit that any fetus can be considered alive by as early as week 9, and definitively by week 18. This is far prior to point at which a human fetus is considered "viable", but yet it is scientifically considered to be "alive".

Isn't it sad that we are willing to kill our children for the sake of our convenience?

Conversely, if life does NOT begin at conception – what's the problem? What are these people trying to eliminate? Let that lifeless little blob (or whatever it is you think it is) stay put then nine months later let it out.

Yours is one of the stupidest arguments I've ever heard. A baby is not a toddler; a toddler is not an adult... so what? If you kill a person at any stage you're denying that person the right to develop to later stages. We all started life as a few cells and eventually reached the stage in life where we are now.

The fact a life form has not yet developed to what it will later become changes nothing. It's not like that non-life thing (that you think it is) is going to become a pair of shoes or a handbag. Oh wait, if that were the case maybe a lot of these women would be much less willing to kill it.

For women, abortion means life, not death. Every woman has the right to keep a pregnancy or terminate it. I find it funny that it is men, those humans who will never know what's like to be pregnant and give birth, XY-chromosomed individuals who have no idea how a woman's body functions, that have the gall, the nerve to tell women what to do with their bodies. A woman's body is sacred to her and she, not religion, not society, not masculist culture, she is the only one to have a say whether or not to continue a pregnancy. Men really ought to get over their obsession with controlling women's bodies!

I use to think the same way, until I met my wife and she opened my eyes to it. It takes two people to make the baby, it's not the woman's body once another body is made. If the baby could talk, I'm pretty sure he/she would want to live.

The woman is making a sellfish desicion only thinking about herself, not her baby.

Add that to the psycological toll (planned parenthood has no theapy sessions for abortive mothers) and the risk of never being able to have a baby again (some abortions result in the woman to never have the opportunity again).

Some women become depressed after their abortion regretting what would have been.

Many more women become depressed after having children as well as become infertile after having children. Giving birth is much more traumatic on a woman's body and mind than an abortion.

There is a reason why almost every country worth living in has abortion legal and countries that you wouldn't want to live in dont have it. It is almos the line of demarcation of a first world country.

If a male wants a woman to do him the immense honor of consenting to permit his dna to propagate via her most private efforts, then that male darn well better be a good and decent human, working for a better world, doing everything in his power to convince her that he deserved, and continues to deserve, the favor.

First – it's not just men who are against abortion; plenty of women out there are against it as well.

Second – I've had an education, I don't have to experience the workings of a woman's body to understand what goes on in there. Just like I don't have to sniff cocaine to know it's bad for me.

Third – I will continue to tell you what I think you should do with your body when it comes to the life of another individual (by way of voting and legislation). You are so concerned with the well being of the mother, you neglect the unborn HUMAN child growing inside you. How selfish.

As a woman, who experienced the incredible miracle of pregnancy, you do NOT speak for me, Madeline. I experienced the incredible spark of life in my womb for all 9 months: the instant connection, the miracle of hearing a heartbeat, the flutter of movement, the tumbling and kicking of LIFE. I used to be OK with abortion, but NO more. My daughter is now 12–an incredible, kind, and gracious young woman. Her life is a treasure. So, you can't just blame men for the suggestion that maybe you should have a shred of conscience for snuffing out an innocent life. As a proud woman AND life-giver, I also stand in the way of your assertion that you have a "right" to kill if it's within your own body. And feel free to blame those of us women who know that the womb is a sacred place, and are disgusted by your fierce advocacy of death.

Is it possible, Madeline, that sometimes men really care for the baby about to be killed? Sad that men are seen as controlling when they say this is wrong, yet women – who should be protective of the child in their womb, are seen as noble for wanting to abort?
Sounds rather like hypocrisy to me.

Madeline MP said: "I find it funny that it is men, those humans who will never know what's like to be pregnant and give birth, XY-chromosomed individuals who have no idea how a woman's body functions, that have the gall, the nerve to tell women what to do with their bodies. A woman's body is sacred to her and she, not religion, not society, not masculist culture, she is the only one to have a say whether or not to continue a pregnancy." But what is really funny is how shallow and self-centered her reasoning is. First off, let's clear this up: the issue of abortion IS NOT about abortion. If we can all agree on that, I think the discussions will be much more productive. The arguments about abortion ARE NEVER about abortion. The agrument does not center on abortion techniques, or abortion facilities, or what to do with ten thousand dead fetuses in the dumpster out back... NO, NO... The issue of abortion is about and always has been about control. Why is it surprising that abortion remains a "hot button" issue? Obviously, Madeline MP doesn't like the idea of control. Let alone being controlled by a man. Additionally, it's her body and she has the ultimate decision as to what goes in and comes out of its various orifaces. In my mind, all drug addicts need to do is translate Madeline MP's vivacious rant to suit their own disdain of being control by government drug regulations. Madeline MP doesn't like anti-abortion opponents because she doesn't like being controlled. And she needs to have abortions available because she needs to have the choice to control... her baby and herself... and at the end of the day Madeline MP will fight anti-abortion because without abortions, women have no way to control the men around them.

Since abortion means terminating a fetus...how does that give life? fetus = unborn human person ...so killing a person brings life? That does not make sense.

You are severly diluted if you think a woman has a right to murder an unborn baby. That baby deserves every right that is afforded to the mother. Only someone who is mentally ill would see trying to save the life of a baby an attempt to control a woman's body. Give it a rest.

Those tiny beings have their own right–the right to life. The idea that we have the inherent right to kill that new life is one of our world's great lies.

Well Maddy you are wrong. There are equally as many women who support the pro-life movement as men. Gender has nothing to do with it, but morality does.
And I have no problem with a woman doing what she wants with her body. Want a tattoo? Get one. Want a piercing? Get one. Want to cut off your arm? Go right ahead. Want to jump off a bridge? Have at it.
But the baby inside a woman is not part of her body. It is a completely separate living thing that deserves the rights and priviledges as any other human being.
Watch an abortion sometime and tell me how moral you think this barbaric act really is.
I'd rather the woman simply give birth and give the baby away and then jump off that bridge so she doesn't have to worry about an unwanted pregnancy ever again.

Where do rights come from? Are they granted by the state? Are they the achievement of power? Are they the spoils of victory over one's opponent?
Traditionally, the notion was that a right derives from the dignity of the individual human person – a dignity that flows from each individuals likeness to God.

Madeline, your argument is flawed in many ways.

Can a woman destroy the XX-chromosomed individual she has conceived? Why should she be allowed to destroy another woman whose body is sacred to her? If you want to argue the embryo is part of the mother, you have no basis in science.

I know what it is like to hold the hand of a crying woman 5, 10, and 20 years after having an abortion because of depression that has set in. I know what it is like to witness the birth of a child. I've seen the joy on the faces of parents receiving an adopted child because they are unable to have children. This is not a gender issue. This is a human issue. I'll never know first had exactly what women go through, but I've seen enough misery and depression to convince me this is wrong. I truly believe that one day, like slavery and segregation, people will look back on this and wonder what we were thinking. Perhaps not in my lifetime or my grandchild's, but someday.

An anti-abortion law does not mean women are being oppressed or rights stripped. This is not a civil rights issue its a moral issue that each society has to deal with. Many countries morally don't agree with abortion and many have no issue with it. Let each one decide and respect their choice.

As a society and as a world we've got to find a way to end the selfish practice of abortion on demand. Probably the best way is to lay out the facts that this practice is killing 1 in 3 babies in the US alone, kills millions (if not billions) more around the world and is completely without moral merit. Then, we've got to do the next, and more difficult thing – find a way to fund the upbringing of another 33% of kids in our country alone. One without the other is not going to work. It's going to take money, time and effort, and lots of each to end abortion, raise the kids that would have been aborted, and bring this long moral tragedy to an end.

@Alger Dave. Abortion is a decision that only a woman can make. Perhaps you should suggest that once a woman becomes pregnant, she should be considered ward of the state, perhaps tied to her bed until 9 months later when she will give birth. Since we still have not attained equality between women and men, why not create another class of sub-humans, the pregnant woman? Because this is what we are talking here about: birthing slavery – when a woman is forced into continuing a pregnancy and forced birthing, she has no rights, ergo, she is a slave, an incubator, a nothing.

Abortion is just murder. It is killing another living being.

Yeah, they can get knocked up and have fun, but they don't want to deal with it once the fun turns into "...I'm pregnant..."

Really? you idiots believe any large percentage of women use abortion AS BIRTH CONTROL AS ITS SOLE EXISTANCE?

Go to hell, straight to hell.

There is a HUGE difference between being pro-LIFE and pro-BIRTH. Most of you morons only care about the birth, but as soon as the baby is born you could care less about the rest of that babies life or well being.

STOP DONATING MILLIONS TO ANTI-ABORTION CAUSES AND START HELPING WITH THE PROBLEM, MILLIONS OF CHILDREN GO UN ADOPTED, UNWANTED, AND UNLOVED IN THIS COUNTRY EVERY YEAR WHILE BIGOTS PUSH FOR MORE TO BE BORN AND UNCARED FOR.

PRO LIFE DOES NOT THE REST OF THEIR LIVES, ALL YOU CARE ABOUT IS THE BIRTH.

Uterus, no brain. Shouldn't have loudly announced that they were coming if they didn't want to be blocked at the port.

Wrong. If an abortion is needed, there was a man involved there somewhere. Just because the uterus is the vessel, does not qualify it as the sole owner of the contents.

The man's choice happens when he decides to ejaculate inside a woman without wearing a condom. After that, it's HER choice. How many times do we have to explain this to you brain donors? If you can't see yourself having a child with a woman, keep it in your pants.

After conception it's HER decision. YOUR decision is OVER. There's no taking it back then. You may WANT to, but it's too late. If you don't have a bond with her of love and affection, then too bad for you. She owes you NOTHING, and it's her decision whether she wants to give 18 years of her life, a very long investment, to YOUR GENETIC MATERIAL.

Learn this, guys. It's a single sperm to you, it's EIGHTEEN YEARS to us after nine months of difficulty carrying a fetus. Pregnancy kills women sometimes. Look it up, boys. It's a sacrifice and no one owes it to you.

Yeah, because the FATHER should have no say in the murder of his child. You really think men aren't effected by the killing of babies? You sicko! No uterus = no voice and no justice.
