22 killed in fuel tanker explosion in Saudi Arabia
[Updated at 1:51 p.m. ET] A fuel tanker rammed into a bridge and exploded into a ball of fire Thursday, killing 22 people and sending flames sweeping over the Saudi Arabia capital, state television reported.
In addition to the fatalities, at least 111 others were wounded, according to the report.
The accident occurred at a busy intersection in Riyadh.
It affected an unknown number of cars and left buildings with gaping windows

I looked at those pictures. The tanker truck didn't seem to have nearly as much damage as the vehicles in and around the area. There had to be other (additional) sources of explosions that were far more powerful than just that tanker truck!
The tanker, what is left of it, is not visible in the photos. If you look at other press sources you can see photos of it laying on it's side under that overpass on fire, before it exploded. After the explosion there was very little left. The CNN photo also doesn't show the degree of damage to that overpass. Concrete on the support column is spalled off and re-bar is sticking out in all directions. That bridge will be down for a while.
I remember back around 1980 a fuel tanker caught fire in a tunnel in San Francisco. Cars that were entering the tunnel could not stop when they saw the fire ball coming from the tunnel because the vehicles behind them just pushed them into the tunnel. I believe now it is illegal to transport fuels through the tunnel or for a while it was illegal. Maybe it would be a good idea to have a required alternate route for volitile cargo in Riyadh?
The truck hit a highway overpass. This sort of crash happens all over the world. In California over the years several freeway overpasses have had to be replaced after being melted by burning fuel tankers, most recently in a suburb of Los Angeles.
Congress needs to hurry and send them a check to cover the damages.
