Deadly workplace shooting in California

Editor's note: An employee of Apple Valley Farms in Fresno, California, opened fire on his co-workers Tuesday, killing two and wounding two others before fatally shooting himself, police said.

[Updated 6:06 p.m.] Police say the gunman and a second victim have died.

[Updated 2:03 p.m.] The business identified by authorities as Apple Valley Farms apparently goes by the name Valley Proteins.  Calling a phone number listed on a website as being for Apple Valley Farms led CNN to a voicemail for Valley Proteins, which said there was an emergency and that the business was closed for the day. Police also mentioned that some of the reports they received about the shooting used the name Valley Proteins.

On its website, Valley Proteins says it develops animal and pet food ingredients.

[Updated 1:35 p.m.] The alleged gunman was found outside with a gunshot wound to the head, police said.  The victim in serious condition was a 32-year-old woman found outside with a gunshot wound in the lower back.

The two victims in critical condition were found inside the business.  One, a 34-year-old man, appeared to have a gunshot wound to the head; the other, a 28-year-old man, had been shot in the neck, police said.

A 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alleged gunman Lawrence Jones had worked at Apple Valley Farms for 14 months, police said.  According to a co-worker, when Jones came to work this morning "he did not appear to be himself," Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.  About 3 1/2 hours later, he pulled out a handgun and opened fire, shooting four people, police said.

Authorities don't know what may have provoked the attack.

As many as 30 workers were inside the business at the time, police said.

Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno told CNN it received four patients from Apple Valley Farms.

[Posted 1:23 p.m.] An employee of Apple Valley Farms in Fresno, California, opened fire on fellow employees Tuesday, killing one and wounding three others before shooting himself, police said.

Two victims are in critical condition; one is in serious condition and expected to survive, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.

The alleged gunman, 42-year-old Lawrence Jones, is in critical condition, police said.

Jones has an extensive criminal history, authorities said.

Too bad one of his coworkers wasn't armed so that he could "open fire" on him.

The Nimrods here are those who believe government, the nanny state and police can and will protect them.

Criminals will always have weapons and be able to kill with them. The rest of us should at least have a fighting chance.

How's that gun law working out for ya? Preventing is the key word. Giving access to a dangerous weapon leads to deaths. Whether that person is crazy or not. People with guns kill people. Not people without guns. It is much easier to kill someone if they have the access to it.

  2. AB 109 Question

I wonder if he is an AB 109 parolee.

If he is, the controversy of AB 109 would come to a head.

Guns are bad. If he didn't have one he couldn't been shooting peoples. I wished he just had whipped cream. He could have squirted on folks and that wouldn't have been too bad. They might of had to wash their clothes but that would have been ok. That is why canned whipped cream is better than guns.

How are guns bad? Every one should be carrying a fully automatic weapon with them wherever they go. Even to the bathroom people should be brandishing their weapons and knives. Think about it. A gun never killed anyone. Only people did. We should all have a nuclear weapon in our backyard. That is what the second amendment says we can have. Every nation in the world should have nukes too. You are AGAINST THE SECOND AMENDMENT if you disagree.

True believer, I do not agree with you, but I believe in the second amendment...where do I fit in?
Nor do I take guns and knives with me to visit the loo.
Nor do I believe everyone should have a nuclear weapon in their back yard...if you disagree, you support poking kittens with sharp sticks.
