Man, 64, killed after opening fire inside Michigan police station

A 64-year-old man walked into a southeastern Michigan police station today and opened fire, precipitating a shootout that ended with him dead and a police officer wounded, police said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, entered the building that houses the Southfield Police Department around 2:20 p.m. with a handgun and pointed it at an officer sitting behind bullet-proof glass, said police spokesman Lt. Nick Loussia.

Refusing requests to put down the gun, the man started firing at the desk officer, according to Loussia. The first officer to respond - a sergeant in his 50s who has been with the Southfield force for more than 25 years - was shot in the shoulder, said Loussia.

That officer and others returned fire, hitting the shooter. Both wounded men were treated at the scene and moved to a nearby hospital, the police spokesman said.

The 64-year-old later died from his injuries at the hospital. Loussia said authorities do not know why the man opened fire at the police station.

The wounded officer, meanwhile, is in stable condition. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer and his family," Loussia said.

A similar incident less than two years ago about 15 miles to the southeast, in Detroit, prompted police in Southfield to take additional security precautions, according to Loussia. In that case, a 38-year-old man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl wounded four officers when he opened fire in a Detroit police station, before he himself was shot dead.

In addition to protective glass around the desk area, only the lobby of the police station in Southfield - a city of about 72,000 people - is open to public, said Loussia.

Got any kids graduating from med school? Or perhaps an entrepeneur in your family starting a business making $250,000 a year or more? If something isn't worked out, the 35% fed tax rate will go to 39.6% on thier income. Whats the use of being sucessfull at anything when your about to be told to "bend over".

there's more incentive to live off food stamps and gov't support than there is to become successful. sad but true.

Why do right wingers seem to think that food stamps is some fantastic windfall? It works out to less than $3 a day. However it does keep poor children and their parents from having to resort to begging or stealing for food. If the GOP loonies had their wish to end the safety net this country would change for the worse over night.

Back in the 60's and 70' the rich were paying much more taxes for their wealth and everyone was doing fine, now they pay less taxes while we pay more, boy that makes sense! (Snark). Check out, "Capitalism, a Love Affair", I'm certain you'll see otherwise.

I'm somewhat sucessfull and I'm disallowed food stamps. I'm not self employed, but I am very self reliant. I have a meager salary and when I grocery shop, I HAVE to buy what's on sale to get by, getting to the checkout with cart half full with mainly generic items. The person in front of me does not want to work, and they get a $900 a month debit card, and get to the check out with all NAME BRAND items stacked and packed over the top of the cart. And some with state debit cards sublet the cards for cash, so they can buy beer, pot, whatever. And I shouldn't be saddened that the conservatives didn't fare better?

You know, this is almost word-for-word the bs rhetoric my dad used to spout off in the 60's...except that they were always wearing fur coats and loaded up their groceries in brand-new cadillacs...in other words, the story was baloney then, and yours is now.
And STILL it doesn't have anything to do with this story, so I have to believe you have no reading comprehension skills/just wanted to rant.

Also the most you can get on a food stamp card is 175$ a month, + additional $$ per child... not the 900 dollars you somehow psychically and psychotically know.

That's SUVs now, banasy. We were earning a total of $29,000 a year when we got turned down for food stamps for owning a 21 year old car worth $500 because we had a child on a heart monitor. Social worker demanded we get rid of it. Out in the parking lot I watched people who had just picked up their benefits climb into new SUVs.

Generational applicants in our area know how to hide what they have, banasy. I found out later the dodge they used, when an aquaintance described playing up her poverty. They had their new car registered by someone else. In the checkout lane these same people would wear several heavy gold chains, & so would all their children. The cheats are still out there, gaming the system.

And this has WHAT to do with a man wanting (but to afraid to do it himself) to commit suicide???

The true question is who is this man and why. Had the cops harassed him earlier? was he crazy? Was his home being foreclosed on.

the focus is, what rational human being does this... none.. so he was acting out of emotion. What prompted this emotion.

Liam, you can't get rid of guns. If you ban honest people from having guns then only criminals have them. Even if this sort of think happened every single week, it would be a small price to pay for citizens to be able to protect themselves.

I voted for approving levys on childrens services, while voting against referendums allowing longer hours involving the sale of liquor. So Rednip or whoever you are, I resent that remark.
