A 64-year-old man walked into a southeastern Michigan police station today and opened fire, precipitating a shootout that ended with him dead and a police officer wounded, police said.
The man, who was not immediately identified, entered the building that houses the Southfield Police Department around 2:20 p.m. with a handgun and pointed it at an officer sitting behind bullet-proof glass, said police spokesman Lt. Nick Loussia.
Refusing requests to put down the gun, the man started firing at the desk officer, according to Loussia. The first officer to respond - a sergeant in his 50s who has been with the Southfield force for more than 25 years - was shot in the shoulder, said Loussia.
That officer and others returned fire, hitting the shooter. Both wounded men were treated at the scene and moved to a nearby hospital, the police spokesman said.
The 64-year-old later died from his injuries at the hospital. Loussia said authorities do not know why the man opened fire at the police station.
The wounded officer, meanwhile, is in stable condition. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer and his family," Loussia said.
A similar incident less than two years ago about 15 miles to the southeast, in Detroit, prompted police in Southfield to take additional security precautions, according to Loussia. In that case, a 38-year-old man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl wounded four officers when he opened fire in a Detroit police station, before he himself was shot dead.
In addition to protective glass around the desk area, only the lobby of the police station in Southfield - a city of about 72,000 people - is open to public, said Loussia.

Gotta go. Later. You ARE worth it.
A medical condition he couldnt live with but couldnt take his own life, so he wanted the cops to do it for him! Its not so hard to figure out.
No; he sounds like a 'hood hood! LOL
Have fun JR!
Thank God for the bullet proof window!
Yes thank your god and his magical glass.
Where's the video of the events that transpired? Every PD in the nation seems to have video 24/7, except when cops murder someone.
I wonder what your criminal history is ...
Do you honestly believe this man didn't deserve what he got? That the cops just blindly decided to shoot someone in their lobby and he just happened to have a gun and returned fire at the officers? The video is there but that doesn't mean it is open access to nut bags like you.
Considering the video was just on the news and what it showed, he was hardly a "victim". Deranged, crazy, and should have been put down a long time ago yes but not a "victim".
Mission accomplished: Suicide by Cop.
Lol im sure you do......troll!
There's gonna be a day when all the trolls and hijackers will be flushed out for the world to bear witness to.
This dude could of ended it a whole lot faster and a whole lot cleaner, point blank range at a 50# bag of ammonium nitrate and auminum powder.
typical cops going overboard and killing citizens when they could have easily restrained him with rubber bullets are a tasser.
Over reaction? Really? He opened fire in the lobby of a police station, he went there expecting to die. Be happy that the tax payers don't have to front his medical bills and prison housing which would have happened had they used non lethal force. That man went in there wanting to get shot by a cop and his wish came true.
I'm guessing the obvious: suicide-by-cop. Sometimes suicidal people lack the courage to pull the trigger on themselves, so they force others to.
The 64 years only man may have fired in self defense. We need the video on CNN, we need the proof, one man was murdered no matter how by no matter who and the police has the video of execution, so show it.
I'm sure he's a victim, I mean, if you can't point and fire a gun at police officers inside a police station, where's the justice? Those cops clearly had some hidden agenda and are covering up the truth. We need to see the video explaining why armed law enforcement officers would possibly have any reason to return fire on someone shooting up their workplace.
The one thing not in this article that was in the story on detroits local channel is, when he lst pulled the trigger the gun didnt fire. So he didnt intend to shoot ANYONE but he wanted to be shot!
And in another part of Detroit today a man was shot in the leg for stepping on another mans foot on the bus.
