Pushpa Basnet, a Nepalese woman who supports children so they don't have to live behind bars with their incarcerated parents, was named the 2012 CNN Hero of the Year on Sunday night.
Nepal is one of the poorest countries, and space is very limited in the few group homes affiliated with the government. So when a parent is incarcerated and no other guardian can be found, children have little choice but to live in prison as well.
Basnet, 29, is determined to give these children another option.

I realize that CNN has a world wide audience and this woman deserves recognition, but what about the hundreds if not thousands of selfless individuals who do exactly the same charitable work right here at home in the US. Obviously by your response, you haven't a clue what true heroism is. I have no quarrel with this young woman being singled out as CNN's hero. But her selfless acts are not unique and there are many others, not just in the US, but in every corner of this world who deserve recognition for humanitarian work as well. And no I didn't vote for any of the nominees because these were not MY heroes!
