The Navy is moving some warships into position to monitor a possible upcoming North Korean launch of a long-range ballistic missile, Defense Department officials said Thursday.
The USS Benfold and the USS Fitzgerald - both guided missile destroyers - are moving into positions, although the Navy declined to give their exact location. They are being sent to monitor for a possible launch and "provide reassurance to allies," according two Defense Department officials.
It's possible two additional ships will be sent in the next few days, the officials added.
North Korea appears to be working toward its goal of launching a rocket later this month, with a recent satellite image showing preparations continuing around the site.
Driving that boat around over there is costing us mega bucks. North Korea doesn't care if our boats are there or not. Obama needs to quit waisting tax money.
Would you be saying the same thing if that missile were found to be targeting the US?
Would yu feel the same way if the missile were poited towards the US?
Cnn, stop deleting my comments.
It is getting tiresom. Why have a comment section if you do not want people to comment?
Ships cost the same to operate no matter where they sail. The crew gets paid whether they are at sea or in some exotic liberty port. What's your point?
Looks more and more like we are preparing to get involved in Syria, N.Korea and Iran. And why not ? all is kosher here at home, flush with money, prosperity and robust economic outlook for all time we can afford to play a few more wars.
I have my doubts any country even N.korea would commit mass suicide by directly launching an attack on US.
My answer was to Benn, who thinks it's a waste of money.
America can do nothing even if North Korea was to launch a missile on America itself, so it makes no differenced even if America sends its entire flotilla towards NORTH KOREA :)
If a North Korean missile ever came close ....There would be but one Korea....And not the one that borders China..... Obama has proven over and over again....he has no qualms about killing our enemies.
Hey, McAfee should try to get asylum in North Korea!
The money was already spent. Both ships mentioned were already deployed to the Fifth Fleet AOR, and were pulled to carry out this mission. If anything, the tax payers are saving money as when the ships were reassigned, the crew stopped receiving tax free pay that they are given when the enter the Arabian Gulf.
Furthermore, North Korea's actions destabilize the region and pose a real and legitimate threat to our allies in the region with whom our economy is very much intertwined. Sending BMD Destroyers to monitor the area fulfill a mission set that the ships have been designed for. A design and mission set that began under President George W Bush, I might add. Don't blame our current President for doing his duty as Commander in Chief and listening to the recommendations of his military advisers.
Let the Navy do its job. Stop complaining about a group of individuals putting themselves in harms way to protect your freedom to post comments to this article.
So in your esteemed opinion. Military involvement to 'protect' our freedom, in N.Korea or Syria or Iran would be very wise as proved by G.W.B-Cheney Inc in Iraq and Afghanistan ?
Great job has been done to further this country's interest in the past decade of militarism.
Maybe the Korean missile will go up a few hundred feet and fall back on their own territory. That would take care of a few problems for other countries. Keep trying N Korean, you may just succeed in destroying your own country.
