Campus cops shoot, kill graduate student at California college

Campus police at California State University San Bernardino shot and killed a graduate student following an altercation Saturday night, authorities said.

Police said officers responded to University Village, an off-campus student dormitory, regarding a disturbance involving Bartholomew Williams, 38.

Williams became aggressive and an altercation with officers followed in the hallway of the dorm, the college said in a statement. Officers then fired their weapons because they feared for their lives, police said.

Williams died at the scene.

One officer was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injury.

Williams was majoring in educational instructional technology, and started at the school in the summer of 2011, police spokesman Sid Robinson said.

Campus police are off campus and so poorly trained and unable to handle their duty that they can't manage a disturbance call without killing someone. If you are so fearful for your life then maybe you should be a librarian and not a cop.

Exactly my feelings. Been there done that. The same POS that wanna bash on "any" Law Enforcement Personnel because they did....... (fill in the blank) don't have a frigging clue what the real world is like. Your average citizen ain't got a clue what the boyz in blue deal with on a daily basis. Wanna squak out the side of your mouth about something you ain't gotta clue about, try it out and see how this life of public service works out for U. At some point you'll wake up, hopefully, and figure out, hey, I'm gonna do what I gotta do to protect myself, the community, and hopefully the individual that "chose" to bring these actions upon their self. It's a choice get it? Most of you bleeding hearts have grown up in a world that didn't hold you accoutable for your actions. Thanks Mom's, Dad's, Teachers, Society for screwing this all up. Mess with the Po Po and choose not to follow commands when instructed to = prepare to be held accountable at the level, or one step up on the use of force continuum that you choose to actively/physically resist. Get it? Your choice. Bad things happen to bad people who make bad choices, get over it. Now go sign up for some form of Public Service, ie Military or Law Enforcement and show us all how it's suppose to be done ya self righteous fools.

why is 38 years old to old to be in college. living in dorms maybe but not to continue your education. perhaps the factory he worked at closed and he's going to the university to improve his employment prospects and better himself. your statement in light of this tragedy makes little sense.

It really depends on the facts of the case, which are unknown. If the kid was armed, you aren't going to taze them (obviously). If the kid was on PCP, they didn't have a choice unless they wanted to get beat to death.

He was a GRAD student. Working on his PhD. That is not an unusual age. Many people retunr to school to get a PhD after working for decades or in order to change careers.

Sounds to me like you know little or nothing about academia.

He's a student and all, but what's a 38 year old doing hanging out on off-campus housing anyways? Was probably looking for trouble or must of been a hell of a study group.

He lived there. And why are campus cops armed? and why would they be responding to something that wasn't on campus anyway.

      Lynda -
Campus Cops are Police Officers, not rent-a-cops.

They are just like other California police agencies, they can detain, arrest, testify in court and carry guns on campus...

Yeah! He should have gotten a job out of high school and started paying taxes on his $20k a year job. THEN all of or economic problems would have been avoided.

Benn, you should run for Senate. Tea party is losing seats every day.

That's pretty ignorant. It's never too late to go back to school. Maybe he was unhappy with his old life and wanted to make some real positive changes. Come, join us in the 21st century.
