Campus police at California State University San Bernardino shot and killed a graduate student following an altercation Saturday night, authorities said.
Police said officers responded to University Village, an off-campus student dormitory, regarding a disturbance involving Bartholomew Williams, 38.
Williams became aggressive and an altercation with officers followed in the hallway of the dorm, the college said in a statement. Officers then fired their weapons because they feared for their lives, police said.
Williams died at the scene.
One officer was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injury.
Williams was majoring in educational instructional technology, and started at the school in the summer of 2011, police spokesman Sid Robinson said.

Why do campus police officers have guns? Ridiculous. The training is not comparable and even if you could argue that it was similar the day to day experiences of a campus cop versus a real police officer are radically different. An equivalent would be saying it would be ok to let your dentist take your appendix out. Tragic (regardless of his age – what kind of an donkey argument is that?) but highly avoidable. Give campus cops a walkie talkie and a bike helmet with their names on it. Problem solved.
Depends. I worked in Utah and there campus police received the same training and qualifications as any other police officer and many times saw more action than many County deputies in the state. I was college educated and graduated first at the state police academy in academics (with two college degrees) and came in second for firearms. I worked as a campus police officer while finishing my degree. I then moved on to a city department where I scored first in testing and received several commendations. So before you immediately jump on campus police officers, please know that not all are the same.
It was State Troopers who shot him, not Campus, this was learned by calling the area authorities, anonymously presented to me directly.
are any of you aware that the Fed Gov has math and english scores needed to be a cop listed as 6th grade ??? and they carry guns. Cops should be college educated with a criminal justice degree. Not a high school diploma and some joke of a P.O.S.T. academy certificate. For goodness sake, it takes more education, to be licensed electrical contractor.
Another zombie infestation averted...
Beeen, your statement shows your education
Police spokesman Sid Robinson said Bartholomew Williams was majoring in educational instructional technology, and started at the school in the summer of 2011.
He was reportedly killed hours after graduation.
what's a cop without a badge, a gun, and a few hundered thousand other cops watching his back? Oh yeah, the dude standing in the corner not saying a dang thing because he is affraid and a little bit of a panzy without a gun, a badge and a hundered thousand other dudes watching his back.
What a load of crap, Benn. I went back to grad school at age 37. My wife and I paid for it: not my daddy and not the tax payers. On behalf of the thousands of us who who have done the same, I say "Take a hike."
they feared for their lives? What a lie. Same excuse over and over.
If he was on PCP, I doubt the cops knew that when they killed him.
Pcp? Missed that in the article. Santas not going to be pleased with your fiction
Reason for why police officer should be in shape and have martial arts skills to reduce without use weapons unnecessary.
Not all departments have Tazers.
once again, how many times are we going to read this story? An unqualified police officer handling a situation completely the wrong way. Ending in a shooting death. Let me guess the victim is a minority and the officer is white. SAD
Oh, you silly hillbillies and subliminal racists. How funny your sideways views of real life are! Go on...say something else un-funny and clearly witless.
The police is here to protect the police.
It should be made a law that, on campus, campus police are forbidden to use lethal force against anyone unless a weapon is brandished. Put a murder 2 penalty behind it, that would disarm them, potentially putting it in their mind that shooting anyone is unacceptable, unless there is truly risk to life. Being afraid of a punch to the head, 2 cops to 1 man, doesn't mean there is a real risk of life.
Don't disobey the police... don't get killed – that simple. The law will be on the side of a police officers word 99% of the time. Make resisting arrest/resisting the government a life sentence in prison, without the possibility of parole – you'll quickly see these little liberal water-cooling talking pu$$ies shut their mouths and go back to standing for 'other' things; other things meaning, other issues that they also have no clue what they are advocating for. Good shoot officers.
