Campus police at California State University San Bernardino shot and killed a graduate student following an altercation Saturday night, authorities said.
Police said officers responded to University Village, an off-campus student dormitory, regarding a disturbance involving Bartholomew Williams, 38.
Williams became aggressive and an altercation with officers followed in the hallway of the dorm, the college said in a statement. Officers then fired their weapons because they feared for their lives, police said.
Williams died at the scene.
One officer was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injury.
Williams was majoring in educational instructional technology, and started at the school in the summer of 2011, police spokesman Sid Robinson said.

This isn't the movies where every cop is former marine or green beret sniper who can shoot a perp in the leg in half a second from 30 yards away to wound them. That's great for all the military trained people out there who think they could have ended this without killing the person but for most of real life that just doesn't happen. My dad and cousin were police officers for 30+ years and they would tell you that action with suspects happens quick and violently and when a suspect is threatning you or your comrades with bodily harm or death, you don't have time to sit there and think about what limb you will shoot the suspect in so you can subdue them. I do believe there should be a full investigation and if that shows that officers acted in gross negligence then they should be held accountable for it.
Cops fearing for their lives while dealing with a college kid.. yeah, I'll bet these cops didn't pay any attention in training. What happened to tasers?
Well Luke i'm guessing you didnt rtake time to read the whole story because if you did, you'd see the victim was 38 years old, and i'm guessing you are probably like me, you have zero law enforcement experience so you couldn't possibly know what it's like to be a cop.
That is because police officers are poorly trained, and trained only to defend their own lives. Furthermore, most people don't realize that officers weapons are there to protect THE OFFICER.
I think these deadly outcomes are related to the type of training they receive as a result of lawsuits and internal investigations and that police have a narrow parameter of responses that they utilize for fear of being fired or convicted...which appears to be a damned if you do, damned if you don't predicament. Taking someone's life as a solution to a temporary problem seems far too common with police around this country. The guy was a student, that seemed to care about his future and learning. Maybe if the cops didn't show up the situation would've resolved itself. But cops enter a situation and they want you to obey and behave immediately and if you don't... force is used. And sometimes diffusing a situation by being patient and talking is the solution. Deadly force seems extreme.
maybe u should become a cop but dont carry n see how long u last
A 38 year old student living in a dorm? That in and of itself seems a little wierd I think.
Law enforcement is OUT OF CONTROL in is country. Rein in your hoodlums before the people do.
His age/grad student is no big deal. Many people further their careers all the time.
But I do question him living in dorms that are geared for the undergrads. Heck my nephews only lived in dorms the mandatory freshman year.
Most universities have graduate dorms, even entire graduation student apartments for families.
Unless this dude had a gun, there's no reason for these cops to pull theirs. In a dorm room, lethal weapons should be the absolute last resort. You've got one suspect, and multiple cops, if they couldn't resort to a non lethal subdue, then perhaps they should go back to training or be reprimanded accordingly.
Kid??? How about then parents take time to teach the 'kid' not to threaten police? Hope other kids will learn something.
Whoever fired the weapon was obviously a real chicken and should go to jail for murdering this man. I dont care how crazy this man goes on you, you can shoot hisblegs or tackle him and get him down. Campus police arent reao cops therefore shouldnt have shot. These people should go to jail. As far as CNN, this article is poorly written. May this Man's soul rest in peace, may the shooter burn in hell.
You seriously want to dis CNN for ITS poor writing? Seriously? And, you should try to get a clue before you show your stupidity. Since the closest you'll ever get to anything like what may have happened here is from your couch in front of your boob tube, perhaps you haven't a complete grasp of reality or even a finger-hold.
May He rest in peace.
I havent driven anyone off these blogs! That loopy one that calls himself various names such as little mister, benn, kenny rogers, emma, nate and then steals our names is the one driving people from the blogs!!
Lol deleted ASAP eh kenny rogers? Thats because cnn knows you are the guilty party just as i stated. Ya squonk!
People need to stop acting foolish and need to respect the situation they are in. If he did in fact attack the officers I'm ok with this shooting. It's sad he paid for this lesson with his life, but it was a lesson none the less
Have you ever heard of non-deadly force? Tasers? You are a delusional sheep if you are ok with multiple police killing an unarmed student. Wake up.
Unarmed student? The guy was 38 . Don't make it sound like it was a drunk 18 year old who couldn't control his booze.
It's not a lesson if you die...then it's just being dead...
Another cop killing. No weapon mentioned. Black man? Probably!
I just checked... he was black...
Uppity for sure.
Funny how fearing for your life is not a valid excuse unless you are a cop.
Actually, in the NRA infested USA – it is.
Exactly, anyone else gets prosecuted, cops get paid vacation.
So whats the point in carrying around a taser anymore if they're just gonna shoot everyone? What happened to non-lethal before using the real stuff? Some cops just have a trigger finger i believe, Go back to the academy and learn the right way to take down someone who doesn't have a lethal weapon.
These are campus cops. I doubt they are as carefully screened or trained as the real thing.
Yikes. Educational instructional technology.
Cops are the laziest of all government employees. They not about to put any effort into solving a problem when it is easier to just kill somebody.
