Campus police at California State University San Bernardino shot and killed a graduate student following an altercation Saturday night, authorities said.
Police said officers responded to University Village, an off-campus student dormitory, regarding a disturbance involving Bartholomew Williams, 38.
Williams became aggressive and an altercation with officers followed in the hallway of the dorm, the college said in a statement. Officers then fired their weapons because they feared for their lives, police said.
Williams died at the scene.
One officer was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injury.
Williams was majoring in educational instructional technology, and started at the school in the summer of 2011, police spokesman Sid Robinson said.

What percentage/proportion of the population is responsible for most of the racism in the US? Suck on that.
Is your mother "darkskinned"?
What are the "odds" that your wife is also your sister?
He overpowered the initial cop and had knocked him to the ground. Back up witnessed him kicking the downd cop in the head, which can be fatal..so they shot him. What gets me is they had responded to this same dude multiple times? At what point does an unruley guy get kicked out of college?
Bet they enjoyed that. I think every cop secretly wants to off a black grad student.
jazz.......childish mentality.
Thankfully that pig had been arrested before he can commit more crimes.
People have to realize the police are highly trained and acting in your interests.
Why are so many ready to blame the cops.... Here is a FACT: He didn't get shot because he was cooperative with the police. Try to find a story where a man was shot after he was completely cooperative with police, stayed calm, and did what they asked. People get shot when they fight with police....
All I know, is if an officer tells me to freeze, I freeze, if an officer tells me to raise my hands up and lay down...I put my hands up and lay face down. I had friends be mouthy to officer's and all that gets you is a black-eye and a ride downtown on some bogus charges.
The fact the cops were called there to begin with is one thing, but this dude was billigerent, if it's true he was attacking an officer after removing their mase and batton, and still defied orders to stop, that's on him. Take ownership for your own decisions.
Had Bi-Polar disorder and wasn't taking his medicine...
And to the people thinking Mr. Williamson was only shot because he was black, how about Gil Collar (white kid) who attacked an officer while he was naked? He was completely unarmed and was still shot and killed.
sorry, *Williams*
Little old to be living in a dorm..... even if it is off campus housing.... At 38 I think an apartment would be more appropriate... Sounds like a stalker to me... Gross.
GRADUATE STUDENT is one who may be older in the years and continuing their education level. *sigh*
What the hell is wrong with that? Are there any qualifications needed to stay in a dormitory? Explain!!!
This is the only thing that will come of these school shootings talks, more police abusing their power,as usual. REVOLUTION AMERICA REVOLUTION!!NI AM WAITING TO STAND TALL WITH YOU!!
What? Age has nothing to do with this. The cost of dorm rooms are far cheaper. Who in the heck was he stalking?
Of COURSE that's bizarre. What may be even weirder is these posters saying that it's perfectly normal for a man almost 40 years old to live in the dorms with the teenagers. It's creepy and absolutely bizarre. Grad students can be absolutely any age, but they have their own places by the time they're in the 30s for goodness sake.
Nearly all foreign graduate students live in dorms. Sometimes their funding requires it. Maybe he was from outside the US.
Ever hear of non-lethal force.. . tasers? Unless he had a weapon this was an excessive use & over-escalated level of force.
I agree! Whatever happened to a shot in the arm or leg. When there are armed policemen, against one person, I question the 'fear for life' response. Unless the person is armed.
I am sure they are more versed on that matter than you are. You are correct on one matter, you don't have all the facts.
These are chickens with guns and tasers. If they had to go hand to hand, they couldn't do it at all. So, they arm themselves with guns and tasers and shoot to kill. They will kill a dog for barking when the dog doesn't follow their, "shut up" command. These are weakling want to be police.
Tasers, what are they? Better to shoot and kill so you don't have a second side of the story. When it is reviewed by a shooting panel or grand jury.
Yopu acn never tell who is a sociopath.
What about having a dead cop with small children?
You gotta do waht you gotta do!
Period!
For all you people that are arm chair police officers, Not all the facts are listed. I am a police officer and I know from experience that a taser, in most cases, is a single shot and does not always make good contact in order to subdue the suspect. And for the record, I am sure that this suspect had some sort of weapon or Officers would not have had their guns drawn. You never take a knife to a gun fight, so to speak. If it is determined that the cops were justified in their use of force, then right on and good for them. And for the person commenting on shooting the suspects arms and legs, get real. In the heat of the moment, you cannot take aim at the extremities. If you do hit an arm or leg, is that going to stop the suspect from pointing their gun at you? I think not... Everyone angry with the cops for killing another person, Get real and do some research about what you are talking about before making these ridiculous comments and blindly judging the officers.
And for all you cops out there, Stay safe my blue line brothers...
Yours truly,
Jaybird
Thanks for your great post. Nice to see someone with actual knowledge add some sensibility to a rather charged issue in our society : police and the use of deadly force. We simply don't know all the facts. This reminds me of seeing a 14 year old kid get hit by a car on a rather busy road on halloween. Spent about 5 minutes with the kid before help arrived, with my wife laying on the concrete trying to keep him calm and take care of him while I dialed 911. The next day I checked the news to see how he was doing and simply because he was in a low income area of town he "had to be up to no good". when in actuality he was simply walking some after trick or treating. the internet tends to make empower people to think the worst without any dose of the restraint caused by real knowledge of the situation.
"And for the record, I am sure that this suspect had some sort of weapon or Officers would not have had their guns drawn. You never take a knife to a gun fight, so to speak."
How about the one where they shot the HANDCUFFed guy in back why he was laying on the ground.. We won't count that one I guess..
"If it is determined that the cops were justified in their use of force, then right on and good for them"
Let me ask, WHEN is it EVER not justified with the COPS?
Get off your horse Cop. How out you worry about the civilians youre sworn to protect, NOT youre stupid blue brothers.
