Man stands in mall parking lot, fires 50 shots in the air

A man stood in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Southern California on Saturday and fired 50 shots into the air.

Police didn’t say why, but his actions prompted many stores in the open-air Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach to lock their doors.

No one was hurt by the bullets raining down, but one person suffered minor injuries while trying to flee the area, police said.

Newport Beach Police quickly took the man, 42-year-old Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, into custody, but not before calling in the bomb squad when the man said he had more ammunition in the trunk of his car.

The incident came a day after a mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, and last week’s fatal shooting at a mall in Oregon.

Patrick Wyrick was returning to his car when he heard the shots and, from behind the safety of his car, began capturing the scene with camera.

“I wasn't sure they were real or not. Then a heard another set of shots and then another,” he said in a video he posted on YouTube.

“My wife and daughter were at an ice cream shop in the mall when the shooting happened. They ended up running and screaming with everyone toward the opposite side of the mall.”

Other shoppers began tweeting:

for everyone saying we need limations these guns dont belong in our citzens hands you havent properly read the 2nd amendment which has absolutely nothing to do with hunting. its about having proper equipment to the citizens of the US to be able to defend yourselfs incase a corrupt government tries to take over. that why it's the right to bear arms not the right to bear muskets. the founding fathers knew technology would advance, whether it be full auto guns, or laser cannons, they used the term "arms" for that reason.

I usually don't respond to these forums but in this case I will. First, I have read countless posts on here stating things like "zero guns, menas zero gun deaths" or banning guns will mean people can't get them. News flash: it doesn't work, I just moved back here from working in Europe for the past year, while in the UK where the guns and offensive weapons are BANNED, 2 unarmed police officers were killed by a man, they were shot, with a gun, a banned gun, hence the term an illegally obtained weapon, he also had several hand grenades which are also banned. And for those that say mass attacks like this don't exist if there is no gun involved, might want to read the news; specifically in China where just recently there were 22 people attacked and stabbed by a man with a knife, at a school, and apparently if you really read the story, it is not a very uncommon event. Society is losing its morals, it is NOT a problem of religion, race, ethnic background, weapons, economy, or anything else. The problem is with humans ourselves, and its not something that can be fixed by the government or anyone else. We are the most violent things on the face of this planet, that is fact. We need to get back to human morals, if they ever existed in the first place.

Absolutely. We have a higher standard of living plus all the freedoms the U.S. have and more. This includes the freedom to not get shot at a mall, movie or school by another gun loving nut or just someone claiming he was "standing his ground". Yet most Americans still eat up that "greatest country on earth" political propaganda. I've give you one thing, you guys do have better weather.

That was one injustice out of very few others. Rehabilitation, not retribution. But I can understand that retribution satifies some inner desire for many Americans. "Lets get the family dressed up and watch a hanging in the square!'
"hang em high right?" how many innocent people has America condemned to death? How many in Canada? 0.

Man was obviously making his own statement about Gun Control... or cloud practice-shooting.

America is still very racist. If the perpetrator of the crime is WHITE then people pontificate about gun laws and mental health. But when the person is someone other than white there is hatred, finger pointing and a cry to get more guns. Are we a United America I think not. The double standard and hypocrisy still prevails. What a shame.

This video is obviously a fake and I'll explain why.

This is said to have happened in California but (Useless) Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California has the best gun control laws currently in place, in California, preventing this kind of thing from ever happening.

She is so sure of her policies that she is going to shove them down everyone's throats, using her state as an example of how well it all works.

What we need are psych tests before permitting gun ownership.

If that rules you out, well, good.

First they will say you dont need semi auto for hunting, and ban anything but bolt action. then they will say you do not need to hunt because you can go to the store. then they will say you do not need knives, the food is pre-cut. then they will take away your first amendment saying freedom of speech causes hostile conflicts and that by baring free speech we will be peacefu. then they will abolish the third amendment and quarter soldiers in your home for "your protection" then you will know what it's like to live in north korea. your democracy will give you nothing but drones and a "dear leader" mentalitiy. its called a domino effect.

The first amendment was written by people who went to the bathrooms outside and would think a light-bulb was witchcraft, yet you still consider it relevant?

Get a real hobby that doesn't involve weapons. Weapons are for war, not fun. The cost of "freedom" (you have no idea what no freedom actually is) is the safety of our families? People who are not mentally ill but about as smart as a squirrel are allowed to own guns? Not just a handgun for "protection" but weapons a Navy SEAL would use..

Then they came for the socialists,

Then they came for the trade unionists,
      and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.
      Then they came for me,

the "slippery slope" argument is a type of logical fallacy (look it up).

    • We need more common sense

The slippery slope could easily go the other way as well. If we can have semi-automatic assualt weapons, then why can't we have fully-automatic weapons? Why can't I install machine gun turrets in my house? I should be able to go to the store in a tank, if I want. And a small thermonuclear device should deter any would-be criminals.

It's time to look a good mental physician for you. Until someone kills your children, or your grandchildren, or your wife, etc, then and only then, you will accept that you are also culprit of this insane violence.

Some people say "Today is not the right time to talk about gun control." I would like to know when is. How many of our children have to be shot dead before we can have this discussion?
    20 dead Children?
    30 dead children?
    100 dead children?
    1000 dead children?
I would like to know what is that number. For me even 1 dead child is a price too high.

A certificate of mental health from a doctor, in order to be allowed to purchase a firearm: That's a start.

But don't expect the die hard, extreme gun rights proponents to be in favor of such an idea. Most of them would be disqualified.

People of sound mind become people with unhealthy minds. And vice versa. The only sure way to rid ourselves of this epidemic of violence is to repeal the 2nd amendment and ban private gun ownership.

Tell us all Dave, how is getting rid of the 2nd Amendment going to end all the violence? How's it going to rid us of the guys like Tim McVeigh who used fertilizer to kill 168 people... Or like that Chinese guy who mauled 22 kids with a knife that same day the kids were killed in Conn... Or the idiots who killed the 2996 people on 9/11? It's not... There is a certain percentage of people in this world that are evil, they are intent on inflicting harm on people firearms or no firearms...

You know Dave like many say the second amendment is out of date well so is the first amendment so they should start from the beginning of it all and revoke the first amendment first and then no one can speak against the government and they dont have to listen to anything anyone says on either side of the gun laws

People, our government will never come after its citizens with guns. How many guns have been used to decimate the middle class salary, to funnel money to the ultra-rich, and to enact tax breaks for billion-dollar corporations?

They won't use guns. They'll use our apathy. If you're looking for a fight, don't bring a gun: bring a lawyer.
