Man stands in mall parking lot, fires 50 shots in the air

A man stood in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Southern California on Saturday and fired 50 shots into the air.

Police didn’t say why, but his actions prompted many stores in the open-air Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach to lock their doors.

No one was hurt by the bullets raining down, but one person suffered minor injuries while trying to flee the area, police said.

Newport Beach Police quickly took the man, 42-year-old Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, into custody, but not before calling in the bomb squad when the man said he had more ammunition in the trunk of his car.

The incident came a day after a mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, and last week’s fatal shooting at a mall in Oregon.

Patrick Wyrick was returning to his car when he heard the shots and, from behind the safety of his car, began capturing the scene with camera.

“I wasn't sure they were real or not. Then a heard another set of shots and then another,” he said in a video he posted on YouTube.

“My wife and daughter were at an ice cream shop in the mall when the shooting happened. They ended up running and screaming with everyone toward the opposite side of the mall.”

Other shoppers began tweeting:

This is why these events shouldn't have so much coverage or focus on the killers.

I doubt these things have anything to do with each other. This is SoCal, It's a Mexican thing, they just love to shoot in the air... Ariba Ariba

Yup, agreed. From train suicides to mass shootings, this hyper-coverage encourages the same behavior in impressionable people if they're also predisposed towards harming themselves or others. The press has freedom, but just dial it back a notch for the greater good. But yes, I know... it'll never happen. Headlines sell.

And if you remove any part of that equation, we won't have massacres anymore. And since we can't remove people, let's remove guns.

What would America be without its guns and its unhinged Bubbas? We might as well just start calling ourselves Sweden then.

Mr. Aguilar? Latino? Do I detect a note of racism with your "bubbas" comment. It would be soooo easy...

I think I got the answer to all this gun control issue, and our government has been paving the way since 2003. If you want to live in a GUN FREE SOCIETY simply pack up & move to China. The US Government already sent your job over there. Finding employment should be easy. Why stay here and live in fear. Your kids will be safer. Mad men only have knives over there. The government will "look out" for you every way imaginable. From your jobs pay rate, to what your allowed to say. Plus your American Dollars are worth more. If you don't like God or Jesus you and the Chinese Government are on the same page! Really people if you don't like God or guns. China is the place to be! Does any God hatred or gun grabbers need directions to the airport or ship yard? Go on, the rest of us Americans "Got this"

If guns are outlawed, then outlaws will be the only ones with the guns. I wanted the choice to protect my family if the time should ever arise.

Worthless argument. If guns are outlawed, then criminals have no one to steal their guns from. Case and point, this man who stole his mother's guns to kill 20 children and 6 adults.

Sure people with guns kill people but people with knives, rope, telephone cords, HANDS!, kill people.

    • Eriberto Aguilar

Yeah, because hands, knives and telephone cords allow one dude to kill 27 people in a few short minutes. Oh yeah- and when he's gotten whatever it is out of his system, he can turn the telephone cord on himself.

Gee, maybe you can defend your family with a telephone cord since you think guns and telephone cords are interchangeable.
