The National Rifle Association America has released the following statement – its first since Friday's shootings that left 20 children and six women dead at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut:
"The National Rifle Association of America is made up of 4 million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown.
"Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting.
"The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.
"The NRA is planning to hold a major news conference in the Washington, D.C., area on Friday, December 21."

Oh sure, wait until the apocalypse to take a stand...
lol
At the risk of being called naive, I'm willing to give them a pass. This is the first time in my memory that they have not responded to a tragedy by doubling down on their past positions. It is possible that this one may have been the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back. At least, let us hope so and welcome them into the discussion.....
lol @ blah
Whatever NRA...whatever.
Too little, too late.
NRA: There is NOTHING you can say to me that will make any difference, except to say you are ending your little organization permanently.
Joe, you sound like a guy who's passionate and won't back down from your beliefs. But you villify the NRA and their members for doing the same?
What little? There is nothing. Their solution has always been to arm everyone to teeth and hope there will be "peace of mutual terror". Well if every baby was armed to teeth, this guy would still have killed a dozen guys before getting killed.
If the NRA wants to have a meaningful conversation. Don't hold your boots to the necks of the politicians that might discuss bringing about meaningful resolutions to this. Just because some of us choose not to own and gun, respect those that do, does not mean we accept being afraid of them in our communities to the point of owning one ourselves.
Becasue the NRA could of prevented this... He took his mothers legal guns, that she obtained legally. The kid had mental problems. Unless the NRA can treat mentally unstable people, they couldn't of done anything to prevent this horrific situation.
Prayers for eveyone effected.
They could have allowed politicians to strengthen gun laws – maybe a mental health check of the entire household would have prevented her from being able to purchase them, or keep them at his disposal.
Who says he had mental health problems? We don't know anything yet. And most mentally ill people aren't violent–in fact, they're more often the victims.
@relmfoxdale – Anyone who commits murder, on any scale, has mental health problems.
Always wait for the tears to dry, before making a statement hopefully not everyone will be listening. What facts do you need to have, we know what killed these 20 young lives!
A person killed them. A person, who decided to do it, and then acted to get what he needed and then carried out his decision. There are a lot of broken people in this country. They will still be broken when we take away guns that look like assault weapons (the real assault weapons are already banned), military looking knives, etc. away from them. Then they'll plow into crowds with cars, or construct bombs. People act, objects do not. We need to better identify, and then treat with dignity so they can get better or if they can't they can be housed in a safe manner.
Meaningful contributions? Let's see what those are.
Their plan is to make sure every kid entering first grade is issued a concealed-carry permit.
Now that was funny!
IThe NRA will probably fund a program to have all school kids armed with their very own assault rifles.
NRA now desperately hoping the Mayans were right.
LOLOL...yup, they're hoping they won't have to make any further statements
Yea, padlocks for the school and fire the principal for failing to ensure the safety of the children.
The principal was murdered.....
The Principal is dead because the shooter had easy access to a semi-automatic weapon and an ammo clip that cold fire multiple rounds without stopping to reload.
Meaningful contributions.. no thanks I want BAN on GUNS period
Good. So then the common citizen can't purchase one to defend against the criminal who couldn't care if they were banned or illegal. Great thinking!
Thomas Jefferson also had slaves and didn't let women vote.
I don't think "Assault Weapons" were what he had envisioned regarding the 2nd Amendment.
I wish I could have heard what Charlton Heston would say about this.....
And look how the country has gone downhill since the slaves were freed and women given the right to vote.
Yes we do robertdiller – a person killed them. It doesn't matter what method he used.
There's no way 26 people would have been killed if the killer was wielding a knife. The method does matter.
The METHOD does matter as some are way more efficient then others.
YES. IT DOES. Assault weapons are built for mass carnage. Like bombs. Do you insist that bombs should be owned by individuals? YOUR insistence on owning a weapon of mass destruction does not trump MY children being safe.
Let's start a new organization. We can call it the NNA – the National Nukes Association. Nukes for everyone !!! After all, nukes don't kill people, people kill people, right, NRA?
Around the same time as this, 22 students in China were stabbed in a school. They are all alive.
