Obama announces gun policy initiative

[Updated 12:06 pm ET] With the shock and horror from Newtown giving way to anger and calls for action, President Barack Obama announced Wednesday his first concrete steps in addressing the raging debate about gun policy.

Obama said that Vice President Joe Biden will lead an interagency process to develop policy in the wake of the Connecticut elementary school massacre.

Obama said he wants proposals on his desk quickly.

Amazing how fast Obama is ready to swoop in to vulturize the 2nd amendment. Yes, it is a horrible thing that happened here in connecticut, but if Obama had any real sense of civil duty, he would do something about the thousands that were blown up in the 911 controlled demolition, not the 24 killed in this incident. How about reforming our media? Reforming out foreign policy? Reforming the 911 investigation? Telling out troops the truth? What a tool.

The Prsident isn't going to deccimate your 2nd amemdment rights, but can you tell me why you feel it necessary for anyone to possess an assault weapon?
And it was 26 killed in this tragedy, 20 of them six and seven year olds.

@banasy out of curiosity what feature of assault weapons do you find unnecessary?

The firearm used in Sandy Hook was not an assault rifle. An assault rifle fire in single, burst or full auto mode. This was a civilian Bushmaster that fired only in single mode, and no you can't modify it unless you are a gunsmith and then it is illegal to do so. I do wish everyone would quit calling this an assault rifle as it clearly isn't one.

This is America, the United States of. Since when does anyone in this country buy things based on what they need? That's not the American way. We buy things that we want. You can ask why anyone would want an assault rifle, but don't be so naive as to think that anyone has to have a legitimate need in order to purchase something. Does anyone need a sports car? Does a soccer mom need a gas sucking SUV? Does a family of 3 need a 6000 sq ft home? No. They just want them.
Oh, and there were 27 people who died in this tragedy. Not 26.

I don't think "vulturize" is a word. Maybe you meant eviscerate? Aside from that, I think something needs to be done about the availability of automatic weapons. What is really pathetic is that there has to be a massacre like this to make people realize that. What's worse is that is isn't even the first one.

@banasy, we have the right to powerful weapons, so that the government is not in the position of total power. If you get rid of powerful weapons, only criminals have them. Kind of like mexico and china.

I'm just glad that the president found the time to take off from his busy schedule of firing hellfire missiles from drones into supposedly friendly countries at suspects on his "kill list". Of course there are never any women and children killed in these drone strikes. Keep up the good work Mr. President

Why is it that everyone is jumping on the "how" and not trying to answer the "why"? It seems to me that if you're really interested in preventing this from happening again in the future, asking, "Why did that guy walk into a school and kill 26 people and what can we do to stop that?" is a far more important and lasting solution than simply saying that we need stronger gun laws. You can't take away the criminals' tools because criminals will always find other tools. You need to take away criminals' motivation for being a criminal. That's how you stop things like this from happening.
Of course, answering the "why" is a much harder question and we can't expect our elected officials to actually want to work hard, can we.

The "Why" is the big question.

The 'How" is a red herring. For gun control excuse.

We know the "why" in this case, he wasn't a criminal he was mentally disturbed and he got access to a weapon that should not have been available.

Why has it been reported as an assault rifle then? And if it wasnt, how did he manage to kill so many without reloading?

Well, what is an "assault rifle"? What makes most people consider an AR-15 an "assault rifle" while a Mini-14 is considered a "sporting rifle"? The truth is, and the problem with banning such a weapon and thinking that it will change anything, is that the definition of an "assault rifle" largely deals with how a rifle looks, not how it works. Which is why I think that it's more important to ask why this happened and look into preventing the cause of violence, not the means by which it happens.

The 2nd amendment states the right to bare arms. Whne it comes the assault weapons or anything else the federal government should keep their nose out of it. This is and should be controlled by the people of each state as they see. Someone in say NH or MASS has not the say over the people of TN or NC.

The 2nd amendment is about the right to wear sleeveless shirts? Golly who knew. If you're going to try to defend it, at least spell it right. It's the right to bear arms not bare.

Some real STUPID, WORTHLESS, comments here! As I have said before, EXCUSE'S, EXCUSE'S. The AR-15 is what I used in Viet Nam! WE keep trying to excuse what these type of weapons can do! ALL of these excuse's that they are a "hunting rifle"? Your NUTS!! ANY weapon with more than 5 or 6 rounds is OVERKILL, NOT hunting! And while I, personally, love the Mini-14, it falls in the same catagoy, as would an M-4! How about a 50 cal. BARRET? What about an old M-79 grenade launcher, using buckshot rounds, that is a SINGLE shot weapon? Where does it STOP? These weapons are NOT good for home defense either! And lets BAN all of these hi capicity magazines! Make them so they hold no more than 5 rounds if you can't ban them! Lets stop making EXCUSE'S!!

As a matter of fact they are used in hunting. Many varmint and predator hunters use them. Have you ever called in coyotes?? I have had as many as 7 come in at one time. Pretty had to get all of them with 5 shots. Did you know you can tape several magazines together?? When my son was in Irag he would tape two together and he said some done 4. You can empty your mag stop and reload and back to shooting in under 4 seconds. So would limit the size make any difference. I don't think so. And just because YOU may not have a need for something doesn't mean someone else doesn't.

folks around the world always took us for a nutty nation and we let no opportunity slip by to demonstrate that.
Civilians owning assault weapons, having access to whatever their heart desires in lethal weaponry. No big deal thats who we are.
If anyone has a problem with that our drones be upon them – Amen.

What is wrong with our politicians, are they retarded? All this political hysteria about gun control or bans, and not a word about finding ways to detect and deter the maniacs committing these mass murders! Guns are as available on the street as pot and cocaine, and all the laws from here to Hades won't stem the firearm tide in the criminal arena.
99.9% of US gun owners are law abiding and responsible with their weapons, yet the liberal fools in D.C. insist on pushing their political poison on good Americans. What a pathetic bunch from the top down running the nation.

I have been saying since the columbine massacre that locking kids in 12 foot jail fences with razor wire on top and putting a gun free zone sign out front doesn't make them any safer, it makes them SITTING DUCKS IN A SHOOTING GALLERY. A better alternative would be to issue BIG GUNS to teachers. Our 2nd ammendment rights keep our overcontrolling government in check. Gun Comtrol whackos only make the United states less safe. In China a man recently stabbed 20 or so kids. Guns don't kill, people do. If take the guns away nutcases will just find another way to kill and more barbaric ways to kill. PUTING BIG GUNS IN TEACHERS' HANDS WILL GAURUNTEE THAT THIS WON'T HAPPEN AGAINBUT MORE GUN CONTROL LAWS WILL JUST MAKE YOU A VICTIM OF A TYRANNICAL GOVERNMENT.
