[Updated at 2:11 p.m. ET] President Barack Obama on Friday nominated Sen. John Kerry, the former presidential candidate who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to be the next secretary of state.
The senior senator from Massachusetts is noted for the experience, gravitas and relationship-building skills that could help him succeed Hillary Clinton, the outgoing top U.S. diplomat.
Kerry (pictured) has traveled the globe on behalf of the Obama administration to mend frayed relationships. Most notably, he traveled to Pakistan after a series of incidents, including the raid that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, that had set relations back.
He has support from Republicans as well as Democrats. The nomination will be sent to the Senate for confirmation.
"There are very few people with greater experience over a longer period of time," said Nicholas Burns, a former career ambassador who has served every secretary of state since Warren Christopher, and was most recently undersecretary for political affairs under Condoleezza Rice. "He would be a very, very impressive choice."

You try to make it so much different thanWW2, but in theses aspects it's exactly the same. Hitler had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor, and Hussein had nothing to do with 9/11 that we know of. Hitler's crime was the same as Hussein's- genocide. We didn't enter WW2 because of Hitler and we didn't enter the war on terror because of Hussein. In both wars we were attacked. Now for the differences. In WW2 we didn't join the allies, they joined us. We lead the charge on D,Day and kicked the whole world's but. In this war we have a panzy presidwnt who wants to " Lead from behind.". In WW2 we didn't care that we killed civilians when we dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we were attacked and they asked for it. In this war they want to criminalize the soldiers for not knowing the difference between aterrorist and a civilian. There is a reason WW2 vets are known as " the greatest generation" and a reason that we can't win this war.
The US joined the Allies, not the other way around. We landed at Normandy ALONG WITH MANY OTHER COUNTRIES. The US killed 400,000 additional people in Iraq, so how is that preventing genocide? Bush didn't include the wars in the general budget, Obama did, that's why you see it now...transparency.

They used American equipment more than any oether nations' equipment, our plans and strategies.
