Two firefighters dead after being shot while responding to house fire; suspect dead

[Updated at 11:55 a.m. ET]  The shooter who killed two firefighters in upstate New York on Monday is dead, Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering told reporters.

"The threat has been eliminated. The shooter is believed to be deceased at the scene," he said, adding that it appears the shooter set a trap for the firefighters.

[Updated at 9:48 a.m. ET] Two firefighters were killed when one or more shooters opened fire at the scene of house fire in upstate New York on Monday, police said.

[Posted at 8:39 a.m. ET] Firefighters who responded to a fire in Webster, New York, were shot at as they tried to put out flames that tore through a home, the town's fire marshal told CNN.

Gunfire erupted as firefighters responded to a call shortly before 6 a.m. Monday at a residence on Lake Road in the small town of Webster, Fire Marshal Rob Boutillier said. Webster is about 15 miles east of Rochester, New York, near Lake Ontario.

Two firefighters from the scene are now being treated at a hospital in Rochester, according to Strong Memorial Hospital public relations director Terry D'Agostino.

Boutillier said one of the firefighters was in satisfactory condition.

He also said the fire has spread to a second house in the neighborhood. Firefighters are currently not fighting the active fire, according to Boutillier, because of the gunfire.

Must be deer season cause we know people buy guns only for hunting.

Couldn't be a criminal, because we all know they obey ALL the gun laws. Or, it could just be rounds cooking off in the fire.

I agree with you. Apparently, they don't want the fire put out but don't shoot the firemen.

People are sick and twisted. Don't these people have anything BETTER to do on Christmas eve? Probably trying to cover up a murder and don't want them to put it out...that's the sad part of it. People need to get a grip and chill the hell out

I know the solution to this. Let's arm all the firefighters with AR-15s, glocks, and bazookas.

No need. As they say, alcohol kills more people every year, so firefighters could somehow drink alcohol as a means of defending themselves from criminals.

No address was released and I live in Webster about 1 and half miles away from the lake Rd that paralells the cost line.
Here's an excerpt of our local stations story.
"We're being told there is a heavy police presence in the area. Police have confirmed to us that multiple people were shot at the scene of the fire. Mercy Flight was called to the scene.

Police have an armored truck on scene on as well. Large smoke and flames can be seen in the area. The area around Lake Road is currently blocked off to all traffic. Our photographer on scene says that it looks like more than one house is on fire.

Police have said they will hold a press conference this morning. We will bring you any information as it becomes available. "

It does happen sometimes when ammunition even the types utilized for hunting is located in a property that is on fire, the story make no reference to a shooter being present. Lets all continue to jump to conclusions.

Its probably just loose ammo in a box. Or maybe a gun left behind. Ammo goes off when heated!

NRA wants an armed officer in every school. Maybe we should have them with every firefighter. What happens when someone goes in and shoots up a day care and kills 20-30 more white kids then we will need to put a cop in every day care center. What happens when someone shoots up a movie theater...oh yeah that happened already. What happens when someone shoots a congressperson , guess we need a cop with every congressperson, but oh yeah that happened too. What happens when they shoot up a religious house of worship, oh yeah that happened to, need more cops. Eventually there will be more need for cops then any other job in the world.
