[Updated at 9:48 a.m. ET] Two firefighters were killed when one or more shooters opened fire at the scene of house fire in upstate New York on Monday, police said.
[Posted at 8:39 a.m. ET] Firefighters who responded to a fire in Webster, New York, were shot at as they tried to put out flames that tore through a home, the town's fire marshal told CNN.
Gunfire erupted as firefighters responded to a call shortly before 6 a.m. Monday at a residence on Lake Road in the small town of Webster, Fire Marshal Rob Boutillier said. Webster is about 15 miles east of Rochester, New York, near Lake Ontario.
Two firefighters from the scene are now being treated at a hospital in Rochester, according to Strong Memorial Hospital public relations director Terry D'Agostino.
Boutillier said one of the firefighters was in satisfactory condition.
He also said the fire has spread to a second house in the neighborhood. Firefighters are currently not fighting the active fire, according to Boutillier, because of the gunfire.

Well we all know the answer to this problem, make all firefighters carry guns, they could have assault rifle in one had and hose in the other, sorted.
OR they can just let the neighborhood burn down. problem solved
Or make it illegal to carry guns in nyc. Then criminals wouldnt have them. Oops. They are illegal, and they still have them????
Seth: the article says this happened in Rochester, not NYC
Totally not NYC.. Rochester is Western NY..
Yeah, I see now this is right around the corner practically from me; about 2 minutes by car
Obviously, somebody didn't want to be saved...
The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun on a fire is a fireman with a gun.
I guess we should ban matches now. Matches kill people.
I agree skip. Next when a van drives thru a building and blows up and kills a bunch of people then we should ban vans also. Funny how people blame guns and I'd bet the ones blaming the gun have never even held one or seen one
@gun lover. Of course I never seen one. What's the point? In my case, if I ever see one, I probably won't be here arguing with you because I'll probably be in a coffin.
Guns don't kill people, people kill People ... Oups!
Oh! And I forgot ... Video games too!
No-one seen?
Maybe the ammo in the burning house started going off.
Just sayin'
This section is about a mile stretch of road with the lake on one side and the bay on the other. houses, restaurants, boat launch, ect. Popular fishing area, the rest of the bay is lined with houses, but this spot of the bay has fishing all year round.
I'm also in the area, drove by it on my way to work. SWAT team is on site and there is a confirmed shooter in the area, they just haven't located him/her. The road is very secluded, surounded by water and lots of open marshy area, tall reeds to hide in etc. as mnay of five houses that the fire has spread to and the crews unable to move in until they know it's secure. There are 2 firefighters down already, we're not clear on any fatalities yet.
Congratulations Jim for making about something more than it needs to be. How about you go troll Yahoo for a while? I'm sure there are some posts about the President you can add to.
Ban all guns and our brave firemen won't get their heads blown off trying to save the little kids in the fire. ALL GUNS WILL BE BANNED.
You vill turn in all your guns!! Ve in the Gestapo vill make sure... And your papers please! Ve have vays!!!!
I cant seem to post a live streaming from another one of our main news stations here, but here's the link if you're interested. I did just see a some sort of Army vehicle blocking off a section of the road, close to the fire. We also do have a nearby armory, about a minute walk from me and 2 minute ride from the fire.
Sounds like someone doesn't want those pesky firemen mucking up his "insurance job" when they find the gas can and rags in the living room next to the christmas tree.
@ Hamsta:
I think you're right. Merry Christmas.
now 9 people shot...
everyone here is assuming ammo in house or gunman who does not want rescuing but there have been cases of fires set as bait for first responders. World is full of sick people
@ Steve, where are you getting your information? Not one of the 3 news outlets are reporting this.
