Two firefighters dead after being shot while responding to house fire; suspect dead

[Updated at 11:55 a.m. ET]  The shooter who killed two firefighters in upstate New York on Monday is dead, Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering told reporters.

"The threat has been eliminated. The shooter is believed to be deceased at the scene," he said, adding that it appears the shooter set a trap for the firefighters.

[Updated at 9:48 a.m. ET] Two firefighters were killed when one or more shooters opened fire at the scene of house fire in upstate New York on Monday, police said.

[Posted at 8:39 a.m. ET] Firefighters who responded to a fire in Webster, New York, were shot at as they tried to put out flames that tore through a home, the town's fire marshal told CNN.

Gunfire erupted as firefighters responded to a call shortly before 6 a.m. Monday at a residence on Lake Road in the small town of Webster, Fire Marshal Rob Boutillier said. Webster is about 15 miles east of Rochester, New York, near Lake Ontario.

Two firefighters from the scene are now being treated at a hospital in Rochester, according to Strong Memorial Hospital public relations director Terry D'Agostino.

Boutillier said one of the firefighters was in satisfactory condition.

He also said the fire has spread to a second house in the neighborhood. Firefighters are currently not fighting the active fire, according to Boutillier, because of the gunfire.

very frustrating trying to get news. Use to live in Canandaigua. Media is focused on 50 ways to serve cheese and not giving out real news. I now live 1000 miles from there so have to rely on national media :-(

During the years of civil unrest in US, late1950's thru mid 70's, the shooting at firemen as they responded to fire was wwhile not of crisis proportions was not uncommon.
Not saying that is the case here , but what I am saying is that the social and evonomic conditions today are becoming eerily reminicent to back then.

The gunmen must have realised that they probably could not survive after they fired.
They were either willing to die, or overly optimistic.

A clear indication that Americans are getting fat up with system. This was either due to a divorce, or a foreclose all a result of poor economic conditions created by Government where most Americans have been impoverished beyond repairs, civil riots and destruction will follow.

Satan is having his way. We are a nation that has turned it's back on the living God and He has lifted His protective hand off of us. We are reaping what we have sown. May He comfort the families and loved ones of these innocent victims.

How many crimes of this nature were reported in European countries during the past week?
How many in Europe since Columbine?
    Why?

Joey, I live in the Netherlands near Amsterdam and we had one shooting 3 years ago for the first time by a guy who was mentally disturbed. You also might remember the shooting in Norway in 2011. Besides these two (terrible) shootings we in Europe are not common with shootings. Why? Because its against the law to own weapons. We cannot go to a gunshop to buy one. If you have a weapon in your possesion you go to jail. I hope for you and all other Americans that President Obama can solve this problem. I' m a big fan of America and try to visit your beautiful country every year, so my heart goes out to the many victims caused by shootings.

    @ Jacqueline:
Thank you for answering my rhetorical question–basically.
We also have other issues to address in this country.
I hope that all USA citizens will consider them.

    Good morning folks.
Its rather hard to say Merry Christmas when so many families are grieving.
Yet another atrocious act of barbarism & to what avail ?? killing firefighters fighting to save lives?
Sad reflection of where this society is headed.
