An interactive map showing the names and addresses of all handgun permit holders in New York's Westchester and Rockland counties has infuriated many readers since it was posted Saturday on a newspaper's website.
The map, published by The Journal News, allows readers to zoom in on red dots that indicate which residents are licensed to own pistols or revolvers. It had prompted more than 1,700 comments as of Wednesday morning.
Blue dots indicate permit holders who "have purchased a firearm or updated the information on a permit in the past five years."
"So should we start wearing yellow Stars of David so the general public can be aware of who we are??" one commenter wrote.
"This is crazy!" wrote another.
Some of those responding threatened to cancel their subscriptions or boycott the publication.
"I hope you lose readers now," one wrote.
The map came about in the wake of the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, according to a statement from The Journal News.

That should make our community a lot safer...
Irresponsible media, with another knee jerk reaction.... brilliant move..
Way to go.... provide a blueprint for criminals to target homes with guns.
Unfortunately the map does not show the owners of AR-15 rifles or other long guns... it only shows registered handgun owners.....
Brilliant move....
Genius, don't you think criminals will now decide NOT to target homes with guns?
@shahin.....
NO..... not if they want to steal guns.... genious...
So now, every gun owner must be on heightened alert. Not only for themselves, but for their families too....
Great job...
Helps a lot...
Many police officer's names and address may also be included too.... I don't know what they are thinking....
Not productive in the conversation.... and really meaningless...
In fact..... it shows that a very very small percentage of legal guns are used in crime...
Driving is more deadly..
Maybe if public beatings were still legal...... this reporter needs to be held responsible for his crime as an accomplice to any home invasion, burglary, any crime that happens in one's home.
Certainly reckless endangerment... if it turns out someone gets hurt as a result.
One more remark, How many of the people who have used guns to kill people do you think were members of the NRA? I would chance to say not many if any of them, NRA teaches responsible gun ownership. Liberals are so good at attacking inanimate objects, guns, SUV`s, Christmas trees etc .... So brave of them to do so. Yes I am a conservative, completely feed up with our conservative leaders. No I do not own a gun, but I do not want gun control in this country. Just like tax reform, government spending reform and insurance reform, gun ownership needs to be looked at. This country is not the same one most of us grew up in. The 60`s ushered in a great deal of empowerment for people of this country, but it has gotten way off course. It isnt good that people feel that whatever they want to do should just be accepted. And when did not being in agreement with someone become offensive. It is just disagreement. Please put the brakes on before we go over more than just a fiscal cliff
Uh, I got a question. How is it that 1 lone gunman was able to kill 27 moving targets and not one wounded survivor? Does that not seem strange to anyone?
Answer: the efficiency of the weaponry he was using.
Wrong Banasy, its because your child is a sitting duck in a shooting gallery. Just as this reporter listed all the easy targets that don't have guns for burglary, the schools are advertising children as sitting ducks in a shooting gallery by locking them in twelve foot razor wire fences givinf them nowhere to run when a crazy gets a hold of a gun. The gun free zone signs don't help either. They are just the advertisement saying "easy target over here, they won't shoot back." While the school lock the kids in a room and take role call. The police cowar and ask "what am I supposed to do?" While they wait an hour on the SWAT team. A better idea is to rip the fence down, throw the signs away and give guns to wvery teacher.
Hamsta.
I answered Mary's question.
Wow.
You certainly infer a lot from a one-sentence answer.
Please rant using someone else's name, mmmkay, thanks.
And it should be mentioned that schools were generally known to be gun-free without stupid little signs being put up.
2016........... Michelle\Hillary or Hillary\Michelle............. Take your pick WIN WIN
I agree, and said so previously.
It was an entirely foolhardy thing to do.
Ok, If you won't let me post all in one shot ... here it goes
Remember the Conn Police state news conference?
If I disagree about the the facts of the Sandy hook shooting and present legitimate discrepancies, I will be prosecuted ?
Why was the gunman and his Mother save for last for an autopsy?
Why did the medical examiner say all wounds were caused by the "long weapon" when it was found in the Mothers car.
Because the government wants to demonize anything it sees as a threat. The whole reason for your second ammendment right is to keep the government in check. As long as your second ammendment right stands you have a right to use deadly force to protect yourself and your home from an oppressive government. As they diminish your second ammendment right they are strengthening their devices to control you. Everywhere you go you are on camera, you need special identification with an rfid chip to keep a job, drones watch your every move.
Why didn't the medical examiner know how many boys and how many girls where shot?
Why is this medical examiner have any concrete answers to the reporters questions?
After a lot of recent shooting deaths, tonight I remembered Albert Schweitzer and his "Reverence for Life."
I used to here Schweitzer's name all the time...not so much, anymore.
