Newspaper sparks outrage for publishing names, addresses of gun permit holders

An interactive map showing the names and addresses of all handgun permit holders in New York's Westchester and Rockland counties has infuriated many readers since it was posted Saturday on a newspaper's website.

The map, published by The Journal News, allows readers to zoom in on red dots that indicate which residents are licensed to own pistols or revolvers. It had prompted more than 1,700 comments as of Wednesday morning.

Blue dots indicate permit holders who "have purchased a firearm or updated the information on a permit in the past five years."

"So should we start wearing yellow Stars of David so the general public can be aware of who we are??" one commenter wrote.

"This is crazy!" wrote another.

Some of those responding threatened to cancel their subscriptions or boycott the publication.

"I hope you lose readers now," one wrote.

The map came about in the wake of the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, according to a statement from The Journal News.

So they want to give the same treatment that child molesters get to simple gun owners? I knew New Yorkers weren't too smart, but this is blatant stupidity. No doubt a self righteous knee jerk reaction.

That's the typical reaction from liberals, do something destructive and hateful, point fingers blame the wrong people and label them bigots and crazy if they disagree with the agenda.

It seems that there those in favor and those who are against, but the dispute is not about guns rather the principal of the dispute, winch is one set of people whom strive and go to any extent to control other people and tell them what to do and how to live their lives, 2 solutions one is CIVIL WAR ready! two total submission.

No Chrissy Obama is to busy Hoping he can empty all the change out of my pocket to sleep. Actually I was plaing Hamsta Clause feeding the homeless athiests reminding them that Jesus fed them last night. What has Obama given to charity? You see Christmas isn't about the gifts you receive, it's about the gifts and love you give the next person. So tell me how much does Obama do for charity? The problem with his "redistribution of wealth" is that he wants to take from me and give to people who just want to leech. The advantages of giving to charity is that you have a choicenot to support a leech. So tell me how much Obama does for charity.

Lol im gonna tell you ONE last time @ Hamsta, and that will be the LAST time, its not my job to judge what other people do that is charitable! I need only worry about my own charitable actions, and mine are plenty! And if you spent more time concentrating on what you do than what other people do not, you may be a much happier person!

Maybe someone should post a map of all the journalists, and their home addresses that work for that publication. They should voluteer the information as they seem so dedicated to transparency.

    Freedom of speech .
    Transparency.
Why does the far right only defend it all when its selectively self promoting?
I'd be for listing all Ammo purchases too.
