Police: Student suspected of shooting college employee

[Updated at 5:38 p.m. ET] A part-time student at a business and arts college in St. Louis shot and wounded a school employee Tuesday before wounding himself at the institute, St. Louis police said.

The suspect, who apparently shot himself, and the Stevens Institute of Business and Arts employee were taken to a hospital, where they were in surgery Tuesday afternoon, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Sam Dotson said.

Police officers responding to a 911 call found the employee, identified only as a man in his late 40s, wounded in the school in downtown St. Louis. Officers then found the wounded suspect in a stairwell, as well as a handgun that investigators believe was used in the shooting, Dotson said.

Other students, faculty and staff members "headed for the doors" after the shooting and were taken to "an offsite location" to be interviewed by investigators, Dotson said.

[Initial post, 3:59 p.m. ET] Two men have been taken to a hospital in critical condition after a shooting at a St. Louis business college Tuesday, St. Louis fire Capt. Dan Sutter said.

A suspect was in custody after the shooting at Stevens Institute of Business and Arts, according to a St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officer.

No names or details about the injuries were immediately released. Check this page for updates.

    • Honestly...

Seriouosly? Do the math on your odds of getting shot. If you neighbor wins the lottery, do you suddenly assume that you will be the next one to? Get real.

I am from the St. Louis area and am still here. Let's all calm down. The guy was trying to make a joke. When we take ourselves too seriously, we look more like fools than the joke.

Was the shooter's mom a teacher there? Did the shooter have a history of social problems? Did he leave his semi automatic rifle in his car or take it in with him? Did Obama know about this prior to it actually happening?

These are just a few of my innitial questions that I for some strange reason have at this time. Thanks...

You sure seem like you woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. You're obviously trying to make some kind of point but your inquiries are more confusing than anything. The first part about whether the shooter's mom was a teacher seems to imply you don't realize that the the shooter's mom wasn't a teacher, it just took place at a school. The next two we will have to wait and see. But the last comment, if you think there is some conspiracy for Obama to have anything to do with these shooting so bolster his stance on firmer gun laws you should go seek a psychologist about your own mental illness.

Get with the times America, gun control is good thing. The idea that, "take away guns, and only the criminals would have them" is insane. In Canada, except for police and military carrying them, Ive never even seen a gun.

There are lots of guns here what the hell are you talking about? We rank 13th in the world as far as firearms ownership by private citizens. We have laws and responsible owners (for the most part) thats why you hardly ever hear about this stuff.

Also, just as a side note, criminals always have access to guns and other weapons, theres plenty of news about gun violence in the criminal underworld to prove that point, your ignorance is amazing.

Not mentioned but the shooter was a loner and was failing the class. The shooter was also upset that the it was perceived that the rest of the class was making fun of it. Does not make a difference, where did the shooter acquire the weapon, was the shooter stable when the weapon was purchased? Could the shooter have used a knife to get the same result and injure two people, or perhaps more since a knife makes no noise.

The real question is why is the criminal still breathing?
