Eight women and four men convened regularly over 13 months. They heard from dozens of witnesses, considered 30,000 pieces of evidence. All of it was with one question in mind: Who was responsible for 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey's death?
On October 13, 1999 - nearly three years after the diminutive Colorado pageant queen's body was found in her home - the 12 grand jurors went back to their own homes, sworn to silence and with nothing apparently to show for their effort.
"We do not have sufficient evidence to warrant the filing of charges," then-Boulder County District Attorney Alex Hunter said.
The presumption was that the grand jury hadn't voted to indict anyone. That included failing to take action against JonBenet's parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, whom Boulder police had said were under "an umbrella of suspicion" in the girl's death.
Yet the Boulder Daily Camera, the daily newspaper in that Colorado city, now says more than a decade later that there was more to the story. Citing several unidentified jurors as well as an assistant district attorney in Hunter's office, the paper reports that the grand jury did, in fact, vote to indict the Ramsey parents on charges of child abuse resulting in death.
After so many years, why reveal this now?
We're living in an age of dumb media.
No kidding! This is just stupid sounds like someone at that paper has an axe to grind with the parents and theyll use any means to do it! Trash!
I guess they really wanted Patsy....it's hard to indict dead people.
I did modeling as a child with John. and I remember her as a fun energetic person. Her mother on the other hand was very rude. She never alowed John to have fun and was always pushing her to do more modeling. My mom and Myself only saw them a couple times before I dropped out and decided to just be a kid. I still feel to this day John was wanting out of the modeling and pageant stuff and her mom wasnt okay wiht that. I theory is her mother either lost her temper and hurt John or decided she wasnt needed any longer since she wasnt doing what her mother was wanting her to do. But sadly no one can know since Johns mother took her secret to the grave and obviously her other family members wont even speak about it. I would love to see the case retried and be more public. John was a good person and she didnt deserve to have her life taken.
John? Can't spell Jon? The Ramseys were exonerated when evidence was found that an intruder did infact kill Jon Benet Ramsey. This only reveals that the Ramseys would have suffered a horrible injustice if they had been indicted.
