'Gay' dog gets euthanasia reprieve

A dog whose rejection by his owner caused an Internet uproar has been adopted into a new, and presumably more tolerant, home.

The male pit bull mix, whose name no one seems to know, was left at the Madison County, Tennessee, Rabies Control animal shelter, CNN affiliate WBBJ reported.

According to the irreverent website Gawker, Facebook users had a hissy fit Wednesday when they found out the dog's owner got rid of the animal after he (the dog, not the owner) humped another male dog.

"His owner threw him away (because) he refuses to have a 'gay' dog!" a Facebook user named TN Euthanasia wrote.

The post went semi-viral, with 861 likes, 1,869 comments and 5,048 shares. After Gawker told the rest of the digital world about it, noting that the dog was in imminent danger of being put down, the shelter was swamped with calls offering to adopt the uncloseted canine.

By Thursday morning, shelter workers confirmed to WBBJ that the amorous animal had been adopted by a person associated with a rescue/shelter group.

What would you name this dog if you adopted him? Share your ideas in the comments below.

Idiot dog owner. Male dogs will hump anything when a female in heat is not available. Does not mean the dog is gay at all, but this time this particular dog is alive because it's become so very cool to be "gay" and this case brings more public attention to make gays look so good.

It's not "Cool" to be gay. Trust me, I put up with so much hate growing up, and prayed to god to make me like girls, just so I could stop getting beat up. You see more gay people now, because people feel safer coming out. Times have changed and people have become more tolerant of people who aren't exactly the same as them. This dog was rescued because he had touching story, not because he's "gay."

The idiot owner should have just gotten the dog neutered and that would have been the end of it.

Dogs, both female and male, will hump other dogs as a sign of dominance. It's actually a very normal thing for dogs to do.

This is the first accurate comment on this story. And for everyone's information, neutered dogs also 'hump' other dogs for the same reason. In fact our 8 month old puppy just tried to hump our two year old lurcher. It has nothing to do with being 'gay' – JHC, what kind of ignorant idiots are these people?

the truth spoken by a knowledgable person. I personally know a person, who saw a man stomp to death a dog because another male dog" humped" it, because he thought it was "gay".Ignorance gone to seed. our shelters are full because of the ignorance of the human race.

Euthanasia can't be performed on a dog. By definition, euthanasia is the killing of a person. Pathetic usage, CNN. Not even an editor can catch this?

Dogs hump to display dominance, the owner is probably in the closet, hes probably one of those losers who wears wwf shirts and camo shorts everyday or maybe a biker poser the possibilities are endless. Poor dog.

Really? How interestingly stupid your psychology is. Chances are the owner is gay himself and just doesn't want to admit it to himself and the sight of his dog doing the only natural thing dogs do to each other over dominance was too much for him to take.
