'Gay' dog gets euthanasia reprieve

A dog whose rejection by his owner caused an Internet uproar has been adopted into a new, and presumably more tolerant, home.

The male pit bull mix, whose name no one seems to know, was left at the Madison County, Tennessee, Rabies Control animal shelter, CNN affiliate WBBJ reported.

According to the irreverent website Gawker, Facebook users had a hissy fit Wednesday when they found out the dog's owner got rid of the animal after he (the dog, not the owner) humped another male dog.

"His owner threw him away (because) he refuses to have a 'gay' dog!" a Facebook user named TN Euthanasia wrote.

The post went semi-viral, with 861 likes, 1,869 comments and 5,048 shares. After Gawker told the rest of the digital world about it, noting that the dog was in imminent danger of being put down, the shelter was swamped with calls offering to adopt the uncloseted canine.

By Thursday morning, shelter workers confirmed to WBBJ that the amorous animal had been adopted by a person associated with a rescue/shelter group.

What would you name this dog if you adopted him? Share your ideas in the comments below.

If this were a child most of these people wouldn't care in the least. It baffles me that 'big hearted' humans care far more about animals than children....

Never are people euthanized for being gay. However they have lost their lives because of idiots like this poor dog's owner. They are murdered.

What a ridiculous thing to say that people don't care about children because they are concerned about this dog being thrown away by an idiot owner. The two things are not mutually exclusive.

Most people who really care about the plight of animals also care about the mistreatment of children. Neither are able to protect themselves from humans who have reached their majority, both are completely dependent on their caretakers.

A volunteer at the SF animal shelter told me that a lady gave up her dog to them because it didn't match her furniture.

I worked at a shelter in Kansas, we had it happen there, too. Only they demanded the dog be euthanized, instead of the option to be placed in a loving home. Beyond sad.

I would name him Freedom, which is what we need in this country. I think we should send this person to Iran; he would fit right in with Ahmadinejad. They don't have gays there either so bird of a feather should flock together. How disgusting that people even think like this. Animals are far more intelligent and accepting that most humans. I guess if his child was gay he would euthanize him also.

Since the owner clearly knew nothing about dogs its better he was willing to give him up instead of possibly punishing him, glad he found a home .

Must have been his first dog. I've owned plenty of dogs, male and female, and if they can't eat it, they'll hump it or pee on it.

The best thing is that the new owner won't have to have the dog neutered. Maybe they'll name him Pat.
