'Gay' dog gets euthanasia reprieve

A dog whose rejection by his owner caused an Internet uproar has been adopted into a new, and presumably more tolerant, home.

The male pit bull mix, whose name no one seems to know, was left at the Madison County, Tennessee, Rabies Control animal shelter, CNN affiliate WBBJ reported.

According to the irreverent website Gawker, Facebook users had a hissy fit Wednesday when they found out the dog's owner got rid of the animal after he (the dog, not the owner) humped another male dog.

"His owner threw him away (because) he refuses to have a 'gay' dog!" a Facebook user named TN Euthanasia wrote.

The post went semi-viral, with 861 likes, 1,869 comments and 5,048 shares. After Gawker told the rest of the digital world about it, noting that the dog was in imminent danger of being put down, the shelter was swamped with calls offering to adopt the uncloseted canine.

By Thursday morning, shelter workers confirmed to WBBJ that the amorous animal had been adopted by a person associated with a rescue/shelter group.

What would you name this dog if you adopted him? Share your ideas in the comments below.

it's call asserting dominance all dogs do it, the dog isn't gay and the owner is a bloody idiot.

I was thinking Pinky or maybe Fabulous. You could also go with apple, orange, kiwi, or the name of any other fruit.

What an absolutely clueless freak! The owner...not the dog! It has long been known that male dogs hump other dogs (as do the females) as a dominance gesture. The dog being humped is supposed to "submit" and become lower on the totem pole. If not, then it just becomes a he who humps most, humps best. It's dog behavior...not being "gay"!

so... they know the owner put the dog up for adoption because the dog was gay, but they don't know the name of the owner, or even the name of the dog?

Could it be, just maybe, like many other things on the internet, a real dog was put up for adoption and some idiot made up a story to generate false outrage? It happens on reddit all the time, why not on facebook?

I seriously doubt they are allowed to release the name of the owner. I think I did see the name of the person that adopted him... whatever just take a nice story for what it is... At least its not another story about taking guns out of the hands of citizens..

When animals are given up to shelters, the reason they were given up has to be available so potential owners will know if the dog has a history of violence or aggression. The previous owners names are never released.

Why are people so dumb? It's a pity you don't have to take a stupidity test to get a pet.

If that person had the least amount of knowledge about dogs, he should have known the dog was just trying to claim his position as the dominate dog. Female dogs also do this to to try and become the dominant dog. The dog was not trying to have intercourse with his other male dog.

I'm glad the dog found another family. Christians that toss away, make fun of, judge, or hate gays are not christians they're sad sacks that are perverting Jesus's message.
