Student shot at Atlanta school; fellow student in custody

[Update 4:54 p.m. ET] Families are having joyful reunions as students pour out of four buses that have delivered them from Price Middle School in Atlanta, where a student was shot and wounded Thursday afternoon.

[Update 4:45 p.m. ET] Students are being loaded onto buses for transport home or to a nearby church where parents have assembled to wait for their children.

Police detectives are interviewing the victim in the hospital, his mother told CNN affiliate WSB-TV. He knows the assailant, who the mother said was "talking smack" to her son before pulling out a gun and firing, the station said.

[Update 4:20 p.m. ET] Atlanta Public Schools confirmed both the victim and the suspect are students at Price Middle School.

[Update 4:16 p.m. ET] Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed issued the following statement:

"Gun violence in and around our schools is simply unconscionable and must end. Too many young people are being harmed, and too many families are suffering from unimaginable and unnecessary grief. I pray that the student who was shot today at Price Middle School in southwest Atlanta recovers quickly and can return home to family and friends. A suspect has been taken into custody. I would also like the students, faculty and families of the Price Middle School community to know that they have the full support of the City of Atlanta as they heal from today's terrible incident. The city's Employee Assistance Program counselors are already at the school providing guidance for students, faculty and family members."

[Update 4:07 p.m. ET] The mother of the student wounded Thursday at Price Middle School in Atlanta told CNN affiliate WSB that her son was struck in the head by a bullet which exited. She confirmed the 14-year-old was conscious and alert.

A large crowd of parents has gathered near the school waiting for the lockdown to end and students to be released, WSB reported.

Atlanta Public Schools scheduled a news conference for 4 p.m.

[Original post] A student was shot Thursday afternoon at a middle school in Atlanta, Georgia, police say.

Police found a wounded student outside Price Middle School after responding to a shooting call shortly before 2 p.m., police said.

"The student has been transported alert, conscious and breathing to Grady hospital," police said.

The 14-year-old male victim was shot in the head, CNN affiliate WSB-TV reported.

A suspect, believed to be another student, was taken into custody. The school was locked down but all other students are safe, police said.

Religion has been the cause of more deaths than anything else in the world. Your theory that Jesus is the answer is extremely flawed.

Every citizen should be carrying a concealed weapon, so every argument ends with a gun battle. (I hope the reader recognizes sarcasm.)

God will never take our free will away from us because He desires that we would turn from our sin and turn to Him of our own free choice. Each of us has the freedom to choose God or reject Him, to forgive or not forgive, to love or to hate. God's eternal foreknowledge allows him to know what decisions we will make before we make them, but that also implies that He will not stop us from doing certain things. If He did, then He would be altering the future and we really wouldn't have free will. God will make all things work together for His good, even evil things.

Prayers to the victim and his/her family. Prayers also for the shooter. That he/she would turn to God and repent.

      God Bless.

Society will continue to errode until we accept that god should be the rightful ruler of the earth and all of creation. Mankind questioned gods right to rule and the answer if being played out. We are NOT better off by ourselves, like a 10yr old saying their parents are wrong and not needed. It will come all the way to the end before things change, expect the world to get MUCH worse in the coming years, very bad things on the way.

Right, because the crusades and the dark ages were the pinnacle of society. Not a drop of blood was spilled, not a single country was taken over and forced to bend knee to your "almighty", not an ounce of useful knowledge was lost.....you make a great point.

It is sick to to imply that either pro-gun or anti-gun forces are committing thes acts to boosta sales or cause guns to be banned. That is just provocative and ignorant. Shooting like this one in Atlanta occur all of the time (see Chicago and Detroit) and may be gang-related. Giving this story bigger headlines than all those (sad) others, is just CNN trying to whip up more controversy. We don't even know the facts about whether the shooting occurred on school grounds, during school hours, or whether the shooter was a student there. CNN recently reported 5 people injured at gun shows when in reality only one incident occurred at the gun show by someone bringing in a loaded shotgun which was set off by a police officer slightly injuring three people. The other incidents were caused by people who had purchased guns at the show but shot themselves or another person due to their inexperience in loading and unloading the guns. Learn to ask questions and get the facts first.

Sorry buddy, school shootings are and will remain news worthy items. Its just more common now and much quicker to make it to the news via our wired world. Its just now gun nuts are feeling the pressure more than ever and feel they have to respond. I can understand that. Something youve been told is sacred is under attack for better or worse.

The shooting today in TX where the DA lost his life... That's hip hop culture? What about the shooting today in Phx, AZ where an innocent business man is murdered in his lawyer's office, along with some of the office employers. That's hip hop culture? The DA murder was done by members of the Aryan brotherhood which are obviously a part of, so yes it is racist to blame these random shootings on hip hop cutlure.

Hal, are you another one of thsoe that believes society which has no guns has no murder? There are societies which have no guns and murder is worse. In human history certain places have lower violence certain places higher. Up here in Maine our murder rate is lower than all of Europe. It's all about culture and socioeconomics.

It's just going to get to the point where parents aren't going to want to send their children to school anymore and that is scary. If I were a parent my child would be home schooled! Don't blame the guns, blame it on the parenting, teaching, and raising of a child what is right or wrong. It Breaks my heart to hear stuff like this especially when it's happening so much more often.

I don't think anyone has the answer to any of this, except better parenting from the day of birth. I feel a lot of parents are just to lax in being a parent. I was a single Mom of two because my husband died young. I worked full time, raised my kids. The had love and discipline, They knew right from wrong . I am not saying they were trouble free, but it was just the regular kid trouble.

Hip-hop - what slop! This story is a Democrat party plant in order to take away our right to have guns. Nothing more, nothing less. This story is a hoax to stir up the animals, to quote H.L. Menken. Face it. Human beings are flawed creatures that do nasty things to one another.

Ban them all!!!! And all you so-called Christians need to shut up. It is ALL the fault of Christians and Republicans that this stuff happens. SHAME ON YOU, CHILD KILLERS!!

Why are stories where there is a single shooting victim national news, while stories of successful use of a firearm for self-defense omitted? It seems like self-defense stories are not what the media wants in terms of a narrative on gun control.

Are they afraid people might actually start to believe guns can save lives?

Do you mean like the "self-defense" shooting in Lilburn, GA. The people in the vehicle went to wrong house and we driving OUT of the driveway when the home owner shot the driver in the head and killed him????? That kind of self-defense? The driver was LEAVING! The shooter in this case deserves life without parole!

i'd guess the numbers of people saved by an armed survivalist nut with a savior complex are pretty close to nil. When I served in the Army, gun control there was insanely tight... and we were far better trained than you. Guns in and of themselves are simply tools, but if you're amassing guns and ammo because of paranoia then you're not the type of person who should have them in the first place.

@B Nutty! No kidding! I was referring to the fact that in the newspapers it is being called "self-defense" and his lawyer is using that as his defense! David H. was referring to self-defense stories not being played out in the media as they should be! And I simply told him of ONE that is being used as self-defense! You must be a gun nut, as the only form of communication they use is to call names.
