Student shot at Atlanta school; fellow student in custody

[Update 4:54 p.m. ET] Families are having joyful reunions as students pour out of four buses that have delivered them from Price Middle School in Atlanta, where a student was shot and wounded Thursday afternoon.

[Update 4:45 p.m. ET] Students are being loaded onto buses for transport home or to a nearby church where parents have assembled to wait for their children.

Police detectives are interviewing the victim in the hospital, his mother told CNN affiliate WSB-TV. He knows the assailant, who the mother said was "talking smack" to her son before pulling out a gun and firing, the station said.

[Update 4:20 p.m. ET] Atlanta Public Schools confirmed both the victim and the suspect are students at Price Middle School.

[Update 4:16 p.m. ET] Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed issued the following statement:

"Gun violence in and around our schools is simply unconscionable and must end. Too many young people are being harmed, and too many families are suffering from unimaginable and unnecessary grief. I pray that the student who was shot today at Price Middle School in southwest Atlanta recovers quickly and can return home to family and friends. A suspect has been taken into custody. I would also like the students, faculty and families of the Price Middle School community to know that they have the full support of the City of Atlanta as they heal from today's terrible incident. The city's Employee Assistance Program counselors are already at the school providing guidance for students, faculty and family members."

[Update 4:07 p.m. ET] The mother of the student wounded Thursday at Price Middle School in Atlanta told CNN affiliate WSB that her son was struck in the head by a bullet which exited. She confirmed the 14-year-old was conscious and alert.

A large crowd of parents has gathered near the school waiting for the lockdown to end and students to be released, WSB reported.

Atlanta Public Schools scheduled a news conference for 4 p.m.

[Original post] A student was shot Thursday afternoon at a middle school in Atlanta, Georgia, police say.

Police found a wounded student outside Price Middle School after responding to a shooting call shortly before 2 p.m., police said.

"The student has been transported alert, conscious and breathing to Grady hospital," police said.

The 14-year-old male victim was shot in the head, CNN affiliate WSB-TV reported.

A suspect, believed to be another student, was taken into custody. The school was locked down but all other students are safe, police said.

The kid with the gun has a right to the 2nd amendment, to carry and bear arms. Give em a break! Guns are for shooting, what can you expect?

Inept comment. When compromised by emotions, many people make erroneous statements. Think before speaking.

Parents don't care if they lock up their guns or not. Our society is getting sicker by the minute!

This comment is accurate. Too many gun owners are lazy, pathetic parents who know nothing about weapons responsibility much less parental responsibility.

The media needs to stop reporting this stuff so the kids don't hear about it. YOU are the problem, not guns.

I am loosing faith in humanity more and more as I read these stupid posts that don't think that Americans killing one another is a problem with our society.

A rational, smart individual would take these stories as opportunities to educate their children about gun safety... unless you care nothing about that?

Until people learn to give each other basic respect nothing is going to change.

Humans disagree, even argue at times, it's in their nature and it has nothing to do with respect for one another.

If that kid didn't have a gun, (rather, if his parents didn't leave it laying aroudn the house), he probably would have used his fits or even a knife. The other kid would have been able to defend himself much easier. It's much easier to survive a knife attack than a gun attack. (And it's a miracle he survived being shot in the head so far).

What happened to good ol' fashioned fist fights... they are being replace with bullets. That's not the America I'd want to live in.

What happened to fist fights? Simple. Popular culture doesn't glamorize fist fighting as a way to resolve conflict.

We have all the same glamorized hollywood crap up here in Canada. Why is it that we have less gun violence? Why is it that our mentally ill don't shoot up schools and other public areas, I mean, "criminals will get guns either way", right?

Why is it that CNN is so eager to publish things about people abusing guns but rarely publishes anything about lives saved and people protected by the appropriate use of guns?

Tim McVeigh wasn't a kid. These are adults for the most part. Columbine the exception. And the NRA is right–accept them nothing can will be done and nothing will.

accept it absolutly nothing can be done or will be done. Buy bullet proof vest is your only choice unless NRA wants to block that . Takes away the right to shoot you.

When I think of Sandy Hook, I think, why and how did that person have a gun to begin with?

Majority of those with mental illness will spend their whole life not being identified, either because they do not want to admit they have a problem, or because they don't even realise it. America has enabled these individuals to go on shooting spree's at will.

The requirement to posess a license for a firearm is nothing to feel threatened about. You should feel threatened that anybody can buy one and use it on you.

No one is talking about how the crime was stopped. It was a school resource officer who stopped shooting, by the way he was armed. Good men with guns stop bad men with guns. This school also has medal detectors I wonder how the gun got thru the security?

Yeah, and if there were no guns, then no guns would have to stop them. Funny how circular logic works.

and before anyone starts yelling "its those cursed blacks again who are on welfare" actually whites are on more welfare than blacks but nooooo those statistics never make it out

    January 31, 2013 at 6:12 pm | Report abuse | Reply

that isn't a good argument since whites are a majority of the population, so it only makes sense that there are more whites than blacks on welfare.. Whites comprise 78% of the population of the United Sates. Blacks comprise 13% of the United States population. Give me percentage numbers, please.

      January 31, 2013 at 6:24 pm | Report abuse |

Of the people who are welfare dependent, 38.8% are white, 39.8% are black.

Of the US population, whites make up 78.1%, blacks 13.1%.

This means black are SIX TIMES more likely to be on welfare than whites.
