Playgrounds in storm areas memorialize Newtown victims

A reference to the name "Sandy" can evoke painful reminders of last year's tragedies, be it the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School or an historic storm that wiped out thousands of homes and businesses, and left millions in the dark.

But New Jersey's largest firefighters union is looking to honor those affected by both calamities and join them and their mutual names into something more positive.

Firefighters have begun collecting donations for the "The Sandy Ground Project," with 26 playgrounds to be built in communities recovering from the storm - one for each victim gunned down on December 14 at the elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

"Our only challenge is to raise the money," said Bill Lavin, president of the Firefighters' Mutual Benevolent Association, whose 5,000 members are supporting the $2.1 million initiative on the website thesandygroundproject.org.

This is a fine and worthy cause.
I applaud the NJ Fireman's Union for doing this.

Yeah, why not switch over to burritos or something. I'm tired of pizza.

Who are these idjits who want to take a playground and turn it into a graveyard memorial site? DIsgusting.
Keep memorials away from playgrounds. Or call it a memorial but just write that on a plaque or sign.
Playgrounds should be fun, not depressing.

Do you think the victim that the playground will be named for will actually be buried there?

What's the difference if you put up bigger tombstones than what is found in a graveyard? No bodies needed to put up a tombstone in a different shape. How big? How depressing? I guess that's up to them, isn't it? That's all I'm sayin.

I get you point...I'm sure the parents were consulted beforehand.

Sandy barely classified as a hurricane and they call that a superstorm. What would they call a real hurricane?

Do you see a playground at the Vietnam Memorial? These yankees are seriously mentally sick. But so goes it when gayness is no longer considered an illness. Gayness is a chemical imbalance in the brain and if that isn't an illness why were they force feeding this kid medications that would cause the Sandy Hook massacre? His illness was the same as gayness, a chemical imbalance in the brain. Now they want to build a memorial/playground? They are just as mentally ill as gay people and the nutcase that killed 26 kids.

"His illness was the same as gayness, a chemical imbalance in the brain."
H0m0sexuality is not in the DSM-IV, mainly because it is not an illness.

In the United States, Hurricane Sandy affected 24 states, including the entire eastern seaboard from Florida to Maine and west across the Appalachian Mountains to Michigan and Wisconsin, with particularly severe damage in New Jersey and New York. Its storm surge hit New York City on October 29, flooding streets, tunnels and subway lines and cutting power in and around the city.

And Isaac sent tornados clean into Canada, so what's your point?4 days of solid rain, that's all.

My point is that you are erroneous and dismissive of the tragedys that befell people during Sandy. Sandy was a Hurricane 3 category when it hit Cuba.

And, unless I have missed something, southern states were affected, too.

Strawmant argument AGAIN. Being gay isn't an illness, and Adam Lanza wasn't gay. That has nothing to do with the reasons he was taking meds. Being gay isn't caused by a chemical imbalance. Sorry.

For those who don't get the correlation, I will repeat it: the fireman are rebuilding the playgrounds lost in Hurricane Sandy in honor of each of the children who died at Sandy Hook. Memorial parks abound in the US. Yeesh.

Every addict says they wil die without their medication. They also say they don't have a problem. They're right they don't have a problem, the problem has them. That's called denial. Put the meds down and go to rehab, you have reached the point of delusion

Please tell that to the people that need insulin. Tell that to the people who have to take blood thinners.
      Rehab will help them?

Actually yes it will, both diabetes and congestive heart failure are usually the result of bad diet. My neighbor has high blood pressure and I have forced him to change his diet. Result: his doctor took him off more than half of his medications.

Yes, I shall agree that there are some people who benefit from less medication for heart conditions. Was he taken off of all of them?
      Did he enter rehab?
And please address the insulin question.

And, while Type II diabetes can be controlled with diet changes and medications that do not include insulin, Type 1 cannot be controlled without insulin. Period.
