Nearly 800,000 civilian workers would be forced to take one day of leave per week without pay if automatic spending cuts go into effect as scheduled, the Defense Department told Congress on Wednesday morning.
The furloughs would start in the last week of April and last for 22 weeks, according to the Pentagon plan. It's unclear what would happen after the 22 weeks.
The Pentagon's plan is in response to the looming mandatory, across-the-board federal budget cuts – known as sequestration – that are due to start March 1. The cuts, mandated by a 2011 agreement to raise the federal debt ceiling, will take effect unless lawmakers come up with another deficit reduction plan.

This government is in need of a full blown makeover. If they would stop giving bonuses and stop paying congress and other higher government employees that don't need it or DESERVE it, we wouldn't be in this boat right now. This government has no money management skills what so ever. They don't do anything for this country besides dig us in a deeper hole.
There is no money to manage..... LOL
Interesting... so no government employees that fits your characterization of being a higer level employee (I wonder what your definition of higher level employee is) should get paid because they do not deserve. Hmmm, what in your mind would they have to do to deserve their pay? How much money should government employees be allowed to make?
I guess the pretender to the throne will have to start another war so they can speed up orders for crap that we don't need.
This is good news.
800,000 wasteful positions eliminated. I like it.
the only wasteful position is POTUS!
You seem to overlook that those 800,000 are in your community, your neighborhood and maybe even your family. They will no longer have the resources to buy things which will lead to lower demand for products. Lower demand for products mean more layoffs in the private sector. Less money to be spent on products so more businesses go under. You also need to take into account the money that the states will be spending on unemployment and state subsidized healthcare. This will end up being a very expensive way to save money.
LMAO... your post speaks volumes about how uninformed you are. All of the government cuts will impact the average American because the money from those employees flow into businesses and communities around the country.
Balancing the checkbook is the 1st step. Paying the Trillions in bills is next. How to? Cut Cut Cut! Must dig hole deeper to eventually get out. It must start now and it will continue for years to come! Each day that goes by borrowing is another day added to the future generation of paying.
Personally, I blame Obama.
ya you are right he is the only person responsible rest everyone in this country is clean...... come on dude
If they can cut 800,000 and still get their jobs done must be a lot of dead weight in Washington.
Who says the jobs will get done?
How can they not cut when there is no money? As for the jobs getting done... there are a lot of things that won't get done.
GOP: Oh, you mean cuts actually affect people?
I'm not an expert, but I think that the Democrats actually came up with the sequester idea so as to get concessions from the Republicans in 2011.
obama wanted sequster, now he has got it, so obama quit acting like a dicktator and give in, We The People are tired of your retoric and abuse of power, to bad we cannot have a recall, especially since we find out that your supporters were in cohoots with fraud during the election, the biggest waste to America is you and your leadership, you are as bad as the useless that are on welfare.
GOOD. Time to find something else to do other than ripping off the taxpayer. Get a real job losers.
Troy... my, my, my, so all of the DOD/Government employees are ripping off the tax payer? It is because of people like you, narrow minded, uninformed that our country is in the condition that it is in. Do you have a job Troy? If so, how about we cut your pay and hurl insults at you at what a loser you are?
I think Chris Matthews is on this board . . . so much of this sounds like his useless rhetoric.
Inane.
Useless.
Insult.
Contractors are making a fing killing from these wars. Idiots from KBR/Haliburton were paid 150+ to repair generators that stayed down more than up, install radio/commo systems that ended up needing to be reinstalled by service members, heating up food in chow hall, you name it and it was always half a$$ work. Made a lot of people some money and a few very very rich.
Funny how they have the money to spend on spy drones!
So, Congress is only finding this out today? My co-workers were told this last week. When will the White House find out?
thank you Obama...this is exactly what you want! while saying you don't want cuts and blaming republicans...you get a massive reduccion in defense, something you hate with a passion.
and thank you for 3 years of no cost of living increase!!!!! why didn't I vote for you? because I am not stupid...like liberals, democrats and community organizers
Quick start another war gotta save those jobs, it'll be good for the economy.
