February 26, 2012.
That was the day two strangers - Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager walking back with Skittles and an iced tea he'd picked up at 7-Eleven, and George Zimmerman, a white Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida - met for the first and only time.
It's been nearly a year since Zimmerman shot Martin to death. The incident generated huge outrage across the country for months and led to a wide-ranging conversation about the state of U.S. race relations.
Zimmerman acknowledged shooting Martin but said it was in self-defense. Attorneys for Martin's family have accused Zimmerman of racially profiling Martin and shooting him "in cold blood."
Attention to the case has died down substantially in recent months, and you may have been focused on other things. Here are a few things you might not know about the case, which is scheduled for a June 10 trial.
Hmmm ok?? WHERE/WHAT are the things we might have missed?
This article is written with a strong bias, and we have not forgotten about iced tea and Skittles.
This case did not lead to "a conversation" about race relations: it led to a controversy about what happened. The "outrage" was on both sides of the argument.
Regarding the "state of U.S. race relations" mentioned in the article, race relations between whites and African-Americans are now the worst that they have been in my lifetime. The situation is getting worse, not better.
@ Joey, i totally agree and what we see right here is a prime example why! Wonder if the media personel rests easy at night after stories like this?
@ chrissy: good morning.
I don't think that these writers realize the nature of their incendiary propaganda. They think that they are advocates for justice, progress, and Truth. I think that it will get a lot worse before it gets better.
Agreed, Joey. The media these days are more concerned with the "entertainment" value than actual news. This is nothing more than tabloid reporting, along the lines of "Weekly World News". Any journalistic integrity has been abandoned long ago.
What do you mean, the media doesn't realize what they're doing? They know EXACTLY what they're doing. Whipping up controversy to a fever-pitch, encouraging people to violently take sides, and broadcasting any violent events driven from these events is a sure-fire path to ratings gold. It's been this way since Vietnam.
@chrissy,good mornin chrissy, long time no speak..This deal has brought the racist out plus gun advocates for this "Stand Your Ground Act" that doesn't have anything to do with this. This shows a man,a community watch volunteer that wore military fatique outfits to HOA meetings, gun holstered and all..Another Charlie Bronson Death Wish wanne be that was trying his hardest to be recognised by local police for a future job and taking courses at a community college for it...That night he was told by police dispatchers to stay in his car,he was armed against all community watch laws because he's not bonded by that community, they couldn't afford it believe me!!He saw Trayvon in the store buying candy, soda and watched him like a lion tracking his next meal and after being told he still got out and tracked that kid down ,what more evidence do they need to prosecute this psychologically unfit watchman than that...This is why I as a licensed gun owner with a concealed weapons permit advocate psychological testing before selling anything to anyone, police included because some of them are your worse offenders like it or not!!I working for the NRC for over 30 years and had psychological testing randomly done because of my clearances in many a nuclear facility nationwide so why not gun buyers?Zimmerman should have never been licenced period and this was another problem the NRA fail to address because all they do is advocate for the gun manufacture that's all, just a surrogate for the likes of Colt,Glock and others..They're as responsible as the idiot here that pulled the trigger and you Chrissy know I'm right..This gun craze should be stopped and Pres.Obamas job is really not to stop it because people posting here think because the NRA talks we're supposed to listen to their extremist ranting .Wrong, we as a civilized nation who own more guns than any other nation on this planet can put a stop to it ourselves with proper psychological testing and more strengent gun training in gun stores, etc and tougher circumstances against violators that don't adhere to our nations laws, make people think twice before using a weapon and tougher laws, testing is the answer, plain and simple..
@ banasy and @ Tesla:
Claudia Cassidy is still my favourite journalist. She sold papers (Chicago Tribune), as she'd promised to get the job, and she was almost always right.
And im equally sure it will too. A heck of a burdon we are placing on our young people today and for many more years to come.financially, spiritually and mentally!
And good morning to you also @ Joey. Nice to see im not alone in the insomnia dept. Lol
5 things the media doesn't want you to know about the Zimmerman trial. 1 the media consistantly pulled the race card with the intention of starting a race war. 2 Zimmerman is NOT a white man. 3 Zimmerman was training to be a cop. 4 Zimmerman ignored instructions to stand down. 5 Trayvon Martin was wearing a hoodle on a warm day drawing attention to himself as a suspicous character.
1) I don't believe this is true. Helter Skelter, anyone?
2) GZ is racially white, of Hispanic descent.
3) GZ was not enrolled in any Police Academy.
4) Yes, he sure did.
5) Many people wear hoodies; I do, too. TM had his hood up because it was raining. I do that, too. This is one purpose OF the hoodie.
Again the omniscient and all knowing banasy is wrong. Asians, spanish and middle eastern people don't fit in the same ethnic category as " white " or eueopean.
Asian, no. Middle eastern and Hispanic, yes. You can call me snarky names all you want, but truth is truth.
Middle Eastern refers toi the area of the world they are from, not their race.
The media consistantly pulled the race card and tried to make Zimmerman out to be a white man with the intention of starting a race war.
The media is many things, but I do not believe starting Helter Skelter is one of the things they are guilty of.
Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race. Similar to you being a German, but you are caucasian.
Both wrong on number 4.
"You don't need to do that" is not an order.
Sorry to break it up into a bunch of little posts. The longer post kept getting blocked.
BOMBO, the way it has been explained by law enforcement around the US, a 911 operator wouldn't use a term like "stand down" to a civilian. Apparently she should have, because CZ didn't get the memo.
Sorry people CNNs moderators won't take on any intelligent posting from me today on this subject, maybe another site...
5 things we have missed about the Zimmerman saga ? You're joking right ? Personally it has been a blessing to not see this in the blogs everyday. All it succeeds in doing is to get people at each others throats as a certain poster above is already attempting to do.
Some people enjoy pitting person against person, Rawr.
I suppose it's the nature of the beast.
A lot of people say it's the government that's creating all the divisiveness amongst us. Between the pedophile priests, Zimmerman v Martin, Israeli issues, etc. etc., , the media definitely does it's part.
Black man, white hispanic (as opposed to black Hispanic) , skittles and ice tea, neighborhood watch volunteer.
So what did we miss? Oh, Al Sharpton, the marching circus.
Yes, that circus can exit stage left any time...it does no good to the cause and just inflames sentiment.
And there are such things as a black hispanic; black being the race, hispanic being the ethnicity.
Good one S Kel!!!
