Argentinian lawmakers voting on same-sex marriage

Debate was under way Wednesday in Argentina's Senate on a same-sex marriage bill that already has passed the lower chamber of Congress. A vote was expected later Wednesday.

The bill would give same-sex couples equal marriage rights, including the ability to adopt children.

Addressing claims that church leaders have been lobbying lawmakers about the proposal, Sen. Miguel Angel Pichetto told the state-run Telam news agency that he had not been pressured.

"There is some pressure in some provinces where the church plays a prominent role, but such is democracy," he said.

Interpol: Joran van der Sloot arrested in Santiago

Joran van der Sloot is being investigated in connection with the death of Stephany Flores Ramirez, right, and was a suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway.

[Updated at 1:13 p.m.] Joran van der Sloot has been arrested and is in police custody in Santiago, Chile, an Interpol spokesperson in Santiago told CNN.

Van der Sloot, who was previously considered a suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba, is the main suspect in this week's slaying of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez, officials said. She was was found Wednesday in a Lima, Peru, hotel room registered to van der Sloot. Chilean police told CNN that paperwork showed that van der Sloot entered Chile on Wednesday.

Peruvian Interior Minister Octavio Salazar Miranda said Thursday that Peru has made arrangements with Interpol to extradite van der Sloot.

Argentina's lower house approves same-sex marriage

Argentina's lower house of Congress approved a law early Wednesday that allows same-sex marriage, the government-run news agency reported.

The Chamber of Deputies passed the bill 126-109 with five abstentions, the Telam news agency said. The vote occurred at 2:45 a.m. after 12 hours of debate, Telam said.

The Argentinean Senate will have to pass the measure before it can become law. It's not clear when that vote will take place.

Argentina to give computers to all secondary students

Argentina will start handing out computers to students in all the nation's secondary schools later this month, the official news agency reported Tuesday.

By the time all the computers are distributed in October, 233,000 students and 20,000 teachers in 12 provinces will have access to a server at each school, the state-funded Telam news service said.

The goal is for every secondary school in the nation to have a computer for each student by 2012, said Education Minister Alberto Sileoni.
