Sports Update: Big ACC test, Big East games, golf tourney

Syrcause faces Georgetown today in the Big East tournament.

The standard pro hoops and hockey fare takes a backseat to college hoops, college hoops and more college hoops. Forty-seven conference tournament games should be enough to satisfy the most devout hoops fanatic (all times Eastern).

Georgetown vs. Syracuse (Noon, ESPN): The third-ranked Orange, always formidable at Madison Square Garden in March, open their Big East tournament campaign against the 22nd-ranked Hoyas.

Red Sox vs. Mets (1:10 p.m., MLB.TV): New York free-agent signee Jason Bay faces his former club for the first time in a Grapefruit League exhibition.

WGC-CA Championship (2 p.m., The Golf Channel): The first of the four annual World Golf Championships tournaments gets under way from Miami’s TPC Blue Monster at Doral. Follow GOLF.com throughout the day for comprehensive coverage.

North Carolina vs. Georgia Tech (7 p.m., ESPN2): The Yellow Jackets face the Tar Heels in an ACC tournament quarterfinal the Georgia Tech beat reporters are calling Paul Hewitt’s biggest test since the 2004 NCAA title game.

- Wild vs. Red Wings (7:30 p.m., NHL Network): In danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since 1990, Detroit looks to extend its run of success against Minnesota at Joe Louis Arena.

By The Numbers

34 – Second-half points scored by Montana’s Anthony Johnson a dramatic Big Sky title game victory over Weber State. Johnson poured in 42 points on the night as the Grizz rallied from a 22-point deficit to lock down an NCAA tournament bid.

13 – Consecutive victories by the Mavericks after Wednesday’s 96-87 win over the Nets at American Airlines Center, matching the NBA’s longest winning streak this season.

30 – Goals scored by Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney this year in all competitions after finding the net twice in yesterday’s Champions League victory over AC Milan - first with his head and later with his foot.
