Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. ET Sunday, so don’t forget to set your clocks ahead by an hour before you go to bed Saturday night.
You lose an hour of sleep and you have Ben Franklin to blame. This from a 2007 CNN report:
Franklin is thought to have come up with the idea for daylight saving time. In a whimsical letter to a French journal, he said that Parisians could save thousands of francs a years by waking up earlier during the summer because it would prevent them from having to buy so many candles to light the evening hours.
In the past, daylight saving time began in April and ended in October. However, an energy bill signed by President George W. Bush on August 8, 2005, extended daylight saving time as part of a long-term solution to the nation's energy problems. The new law extended daylight saving time by four weeks – beginning three weeks earlier and ending one week later.
In the United States, Hawaii and most of Arizona do not follow daylight saving time. The U.S. territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and American Samoa also do not observe daylight saving time.
I want to know how we can ratify this foolish way to save energy. The light we are not using at night is being used all morning. Daylight savings time creates a situation in which our children stay up later, yet still have to wake up extremely early for school. They are getting on buses in night time darkness. Studies have proven that children, especially young adolescents and teenagers in high school require more sleep in the morning hours. They are having difficulty in school, especially with classes that are before 9 am. The time change only makes this problem worse. How can we put an end to daylight savings?
i hate daylight savings... i wish we could just stay on the same time schedule all year long
Uhhh. Daylight Savings Time begins @ 2:00AM, period. It starts when local time reaches 2AM NOT when the time in the Eastern Time Zone reaches 2AM. If it did, that would mean DST starts at 11PM Pacific Time. A bit inconvenient.
