Victims with ties to U.S. were targeted, Mexican mayor says

Authorities believe assassins targeted a pregnant woman and two other people connected with a U.S. consulate who were killed in drive-by shootings over the weekend, Ciudad Juarez Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz said Monday.

The killings were carried out by a local gang, known as Los Aztecas, that is allied with the Juarez Cartel, Reyes told CNN. No arrests had been made by Monday afternoon.

"We know that the U.S. citizens were targeted," Reyes told CNN, saying a police officer saw gunfire from a car directed at the Americans' car. "We know they were chasing them. We know they wanted to kill them."

Two of the victims were a four-months-pregnant employee of the consulate in Juarez and her U.S. citizen husband who was a jailer in nearby El Paso, Texas, U.S. and Mexican officials said. The couple's 10-month-old child, who was in the vehicle, was not injured, Reyes and other officials said.

- CNN's Arthur Brice, Mariano Castillo and Jamie Crawford contributed to this report.

This is unbelievable. I used to live in El Paso and grew up in the bars of Juarez as a kid. Yes it was underage drinking but there were other things. Juarez used to have some great restaurants, markets and was a shopping. We took family members over there as a cultural event. Now the city is a prison to the Drug Trade....and the whole city is a mess! Maybe legalizing drugs could save this city....who knows.

My friends that live there now (in mid 50's) don't even go near the border anymore.

Close the borders? What happens to the trade between our nations at that point? Don't know if you know this but we trade with Mexico a it's not that simple. Don't get me wrong..we need to do something. I'm not opposed to sending every illiegal immigrant back to their country either.

Close the borders and deport the millions of illegals. Stop THE ILLEGAL WAR ON DRUGS. Arrest the police or other officals for there part directly or indirectly involved for the murder of those people.on all sides of the border. Tax and regulate marijuana just like alcohol. End Prohibition. Take back our country!
