A lesbian couple whose children were expelled from a Catholic school in Boulder, Colorado, expressed their dismay Monday, but held steadfast to their faith.
In a written statement, the women, who chose not to reveal their identities, described themselves as normal, hard-working people with a nice house and a dog - and as Catholics.
"When we were allowed to have our children baptized ... we made a promise
to raise our children in the Catholic faith," they said. "We now feel like our attempts at fulfilling this promise are being undermined by the Church itself.
"Perhaps our biggest objection to the school's decision is that we think that it is wrong to punish a child for who the child's parents are. We do not think that this reflects what Jesus would have done."
The Archdiocese of Denver, Colorado, recently defended its decision not to re-enroll the couple's two children in the Sacred Heart of Jesus School next year because their parents are lesbians.
"The Church does not claim that people with a homosexual orientation are 'bad,' or that their children are less loved by God," Archbishop Charles J. Chaput wrote in an article published in the Denver Catholic Register.
"Quite the opposite. But what the Church does teach is that sexual intimacy by anyone outside marriage is wrong; that marriage is a sacramental covenant; and that marriage can only occur between a man and a woman. These beliefs are central to a Catholic understanding of human nature, family and happiness, and the organization of society. The Church cannot change these teachings because, in the faith of Catholics, they are the teachings of Jesus Christ."
...continuing to torment children and other innocents...Does the Inquisition never end?
I wonder if the school kicked out kids that live in homes where their parents aren't married? That would only seem fair to me.

What a joke... I wonder how many children that attend the school have parents who aren't married or who's parents have been divorced and now remarried. HYPOCRITES.
I would like to ask Archbishop Chaput if he also plans to also expell the children of Catholics who are divorced and have remarried outside the church. Is their sin lesser or greater than the sin of being a lesbian couple?
They're in good company, Copernicus, Galileo, most of the Spanish Inquisition victims, and the list goes on ad nauseum.
I wonder how many other children at this school come from a home with unwed heterosexual parents.
How does the Catholic church, with all of it's pedophile priests and cover-ups of sexual abuse, have ANY right to discriminate? Shame on them.
The Catholic Church has a lot of precedent for punishing the child for the sins of the parents. That doesn't make it right, but seen from their point of view, this is business as usual.
At the same time, I don't know why anyone would adhere to a faith that does not welcome their kind.
Yeah, but they're not keeping the faith, because their lifestyle is not compatible with Catholicism. Why should they want to be members of something they clearly don't believe in? Is it to be able to destroy it from within like a Trojan horse?
I would love to know how they treat the children of a philandering rich politician who has an illegitimate child with a mistress.
Yeah but for soooo long those catholic priests have molested their little alter boys. . . jesus did not teach that. . . there is no reason whatsoever to punish the children. . . this is probably going to be very humiliating in the future for the children of course. . .
The Catholic Church seems to make a habit of trying to alienate the faithful.
Way to go Archbishop Charles J. Chaput. Way to alienate the appeal and beauty of Christianity even further. Jesus certainly never taught that a parent's children should be punished for the "sins" of their parents. The only Biblical parallel I see is that you are acting like a Pharisee, Ciaphus perhaps.
Slimmed down version of the Archbishop's response: "Jesus made me do it.'
I am a life long Catholic and a "straight" woman married for 28 years, with 3 children. I am APPALLED at the Catholic Diocese in Colorado for shutting out the children of the lesbian couple. The church agreed to baptize the child–but refuses to let them be educated in a Catholic school because of the parents' sexuality. What about all the kids in the Catholic school who have parents that cheat on each other or have other "dirty little secrets" like drug or alcohol abuse? They are not excluded. What about priests who molest kids and are shuffled to other parishes.. Why is this acceptable? Regardless of the Church's stance towards the parents' relationship, the child should NOT be penalized!
I have written to Archbishop Chaput who told me that it is the Word of God's purpose is to judge people. I proposed the story of Jesus' telling his disciples to bring the children to him (paraphrased). Apparently, those actual words of Jesus don't mean anything to the Archbishop. He would not acknowledge these actual words of Jesus; instead he defended the words of St. Paul-who never actually met Jesus-yet speaks in His name. So sad....
