Update: Tiger Woods will return to golf at Masters

[Updated 2:12 p.m.] PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem reacted to Tiger Woods' announcement that he will return to golf at the Masters.

"We were pleased to learn that Tiger Woods will be playing the Masters in a few weeks. He has invested a lot of time taking steps, both in his personal and professional life, in order to prepare for his return. We all wish him and his family the best as he rejoins the tour."

[Posted 11:28 a.m.] Tiger Woods announced he will make his much-anticipated return to golf at the Masters in April.

"The Masters is where I won my first major and I view this tournament with great respect," Woods said in a statement, now on his Web site. "After a long and necessary time away from the game, I feel like I’m ready to start my season at Augusta."

Woods, 34, stepped away from the tour late last year after crashing his black Cadillac Escalade into a fire hydrant and then a tree near his home outside Orlando, Florida.

“The major championships have always been a special focus in my career and, as a professional, I think Augusta is where I need to be, even though it’s been a while since I last played," Woods said in a statement.

Billy Payne, Chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, said in a statement he supported Woods.

“We support Tiger’s decision to return to competitive golf beginning at this year’s Masters Tournament," Payne said. "Additionally, we support and encourage his stated commitment to continue the significant work required to rebuild his personal and professional life.”

The early-morning crash set off a barrage of infidelity allegations against the golfer, who is married to Elin Nordegren. The couple has two children.

“I have undergone almost two months of inpatient therapy and I am continuing my treatment," Woods said in the statement. "Although I’m returning to competition, I still have a lot of work to do in my personal life."

Last month, Woods apologized in a tightly-controlled televised statement for his "irresponsible and selfish" behavior, which he said included infidelity.

I feel Tiger must concentrate on his sport and just win all those sponsors who are just money minded will surely come back to him and I am sure Accenture will eb the first do so. Whatever happened in his personal life it is only upto him, his wife and kids and none must interfere in it. Even media portrayed Woods as a bad person. Actually, I personally started to respect Woods more since he came infront of media accepted his wrong and trying to be good. That needs a lot of courage and I admire him for that.

Woods...just go for it man.. I know you will be top once again and people who talked against you will shut their mouths.

looking forward to seeing him back on the course. Speaking as a woman, he has made the game much more interesting. He gave me and my husband one more thing to share and that's watching him play. I wish him the best in his career and his personal life.

Thanks Augusta, you have enough money to pick up the SECURITY tab!!! Well thought out Team Tiger. I would not think you would place that cost on your buddy Arnie or Jack!

Tiger is back and he should be. He is having some issues with his personal life and he is trying to fix it best he could. As long as he is working at it thats fine. Its a joke though when folks condemn Tiger for his faults, as if they themselves are perfect people, if that's the case they should be SAINTS and should be working in some sort of a monastery somewhere.
I agree though this should not be BREAKING NEWS, as there are bigger issues in the world than Tiger coming back to play Golf, seriously??

Tiger, I have always enjoyed your golf...however...I think you're a sleaze bag! Additionall, I will not support your sponsers. The Masters is a big gig...controlled environment...and...you'll get your clock cleaned.

What he did is despicable, however, I will definitely be watching him play golf.

He's good, no doubt about it!

IMO There’s so much spin in this story, it’s a wonder it doesn’t fly apart from centrifugal force.

“Woods, 34, stepped away from the tour late last year after crashing his black Cadillac Escalade into a fire hydrant and then a tree near his home outside Orlando, Florida.”

No, IMO, actually Woods left the game because he lied to his fans about being a good role model (maybe for Charley Sheen), couldn’t keep it in his pants, and when wifee-pooh found out about his errr…other woods…. she took a nine iron to him, scarring him so bad he crashed his SUV into said hydrant and tree. Then, in an act all too familiar to the rich and dirty, Woods declared himself a victim by yammering about contracting the medical condition de jure (Sex Addition!LMAO!) hiding out in some expensive Camp Rehab until the dust settled, made a tearful public apology, and now is returning to start the whole process over again, where he hopes to make scads of dough, and meet a bunch more bimbos to boot.

The Masters is the best place for him to return. There will be less of a circus atmosphere in this venerable historic tournament.
