NOW 'incensed' over anti-abortion executive order

National Organization for Women President Terry O'Neill issued a statement Sunday afternoon slamming President Obama, saying that he had broken his faith with women by agreeing to issue an executive order that prohibits federal funding for abortions.

"The National Organization for Women is incensed that President Barack Obama agreed today to issue an executive order designed to appease a handful of anti-choice Democrats who have held up health care reform in an effort to restrict women's access to abortion. Through this order, the president has announced he will lend the weight of his office and the entire executive branch to the anti-abortion measures included in the Senate bill, which the House is now prepared to pass.

"President Obama campaigned as a pro-choice president, but his actions today suggest that his commitment to reproductive health care is shaky at best. Contrary to language in the draft of the executive order and repeated assertions in the news, the Hyde Amendment is not settled law - it is an illegitimate tack-on to an annual must-pass appropriations bill. NOW has a longstanding objection to Hyde and, in fact, was looking forward to working with this president and Congress to bring an end to these restrictions. We see now that we have our work cut out for us far beyond what we ever anticipated. The message we have received today is that it is acceptable to negotiate health care on the backs of women, and we couldn't disagree more."

NOW needs to get over themselves. There were a lot of things that needed to be amended to this bill that Pres. Obama did not want to amend. If NOW is so angry, then they should go after the Republicans and blue dog dems that made Pres. Obama amend this bill.

Tonight I personally emailed the Democratic National Committee and told them that they had sold out me and millions of other women after finding out that Obama agreed to issue and executive order regarding no federal funding for abortion.
Rep. Stupid Stupak from Michigan will cause me to once again become and Independent . The Democrats have allowed our bodies to be political fodder of the magnitude of cow droppings because of Red Devil Republicans in Blue Sheeps clothing.

Why is anyone who is paying attention to politics, as usual in Washington DC, as this current occupant in the White House like his predecessor just surrounded by the good ol boys and cronies that have run American Politics behind the scenes at least since Reagan was in office, why is anyone surprised!?

As a doctor practicing for more than 15 years now, this last year has worn me out, hence my alias at this site. Politicians do not know better than I and my colleagues what is right and true regarding health care needs and choices. But, another example of the adage "tell the lie enough and it becomes the truth."

If Barack Obama HAD a soul, he would stop and reflect what he has done to just get something passed. The above statements by NOW are just incredible to read, not only scathing a man who claimed to respect choice while running for President, but for the Democrats as a party to abandon a core constituency?

This is evil, in my opinion. We are witnessing antisocial behaviors from people who are allegedly representing us. And, they will demand, not ask, you as the public to thank them tomorrow after they pass this monstrosity tonight.

Politicians practice the hippocritcal oath, people, not the Hippocratic Oath! Just remember that simple point here!

NOW shouldn't be upset. I am pro-choice but I understand the Government shouldn't have to pay abortions for people who are on a government subsidy. I do hope they continue to fund birth control methods but not abortions. Take birth control, close them legs and if worse comes to worse get a job and pay for your own.

NOW is wearing blinders. If they are concerned with WOMEN'S HEALTH, they surely can see that getting millions of uninsured women covered trumps having elective abortions paid for with government funds. What is NOW's real agenda here?

I'm glad they're upset – it means this order might actually have some meaning in it, though I'm still not convinced that it will hold up. An executive order is not a law and will not have the power of one.

So now the President isn't pro-choice because he doesn't believe that the working American should be stuck paying for the murder of innocent unborn human beings?

How does an organization that not only condones murder, but expects the taxpayer to pay for it, receive non-profit status?

So, you would deny healthcare coverage to MILLIONS of Americans over a single issue? NOW's position is one of not being able to see the forest for the trees. I FULLY support the right to choose, but in this case, the right choice is choosing to support this bill. The abortion battle can be fought another day, and NOW would do well to realize that slamming the leader of the free world, and a proven, strong advocate for women, will NOT lead to a favorable relationship in the future. NOW is simply acting like a spoiled child that didn't get its way.

Wow, I'm so sad that NOW is "incensed" over anti-abortion exec order. This organization is a crock and should change their name to NOLW (National Organization for Liberal Women), because they do not speak for most women...

'Reproductive health care'? Laughable choice of words. NOW is a pathetic organization who has chosen a despicable flag to rally around in the abortion issue. Lets have a popular vote on the issue. Any takers?

In a choice between a rock (no healthcare) and a hard place (restrictions on Choice rights), I'd say that many more uninsured women will benefit from this healthcare than if it never passed at all.

Nothing will ever be done with extreme positions such as this. Both sides should be ashamed with themselves. NOW can not dispute the fact that women are discriminated against. Let's throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Being pro-choice is not the same as saying "yes, I want to pay for your abortion"! Let's encourage responsible birth control; if that fails, pay for your own abortion!
