9 killed in Mexico shootout

A shootout between the military and presumed drug gang members in southern Mexico left nine people dead, including two soldiers, authorities said.

State investigators said Wednesday they did not know how many of the other seven killed were gang members or innocent civilians.

The firefight started Tuesday afternoon and lasted into the night in the city of Textupec in Oaxaca state, officials said.

Residents told authorities the shooting started among gang members attacking each other before the military arrived.

The gun battle shut down schools, and businesses shuttered early. Local TV and radio stations also went off the air Tuesday night.

A group of about 20 armed men traveling in Hummer SUVs attacked and killed 14 people in the same area on February 23.

Truly a shame, and it's our fault. The "War on Drugs" has been a complete folly, and the reason that things like this happen is because there's LOTS of money to be made dealing in commodities that ought to be legal, but regulated. Take away the financial incentive, and this type of atrocity disappears.

This story doesn't surprise me .The drug cartels will do almost anything to increase the profits from their illegal opperations and violence of this nature doesn't seem to be declining.

stone where i do agree with you that not all drugs should be legalized certain areas of research show that in the states where marijuana has been legalized they have shown a steady decrease in violent crime but in regards to other harmful drugs should never be legalized also i say look at the stuff that pharmacies and dr's prescribe that are only creating drug addicts and then they have the nerve when you become addicted to prescribe another pill to help withdrawl and it's all to line their pockets
