2 Israeli soldiers, 2 Palestinian militants killed in clashes

[Updated, 4:52 p.m.]  Israel Defense Forces identified its dead soldiers as Staff Sgt. Ilan Sviatkovsky and Maj. Eliraz Peretz.

After seeing the "terrorists" plant explosives, IDF moved forward and fired, killing two militants, said Southern Command Maj. Gen. Yoav Galant, according to IDF's Web site.

"The soldiers advanced in a proper operational manner and when the terrorists were seen moving westward, tanks that were stationed undercover opened fire," Galant said, according to IDF's Web site. "One of the terrorists approached the forces point blank and opened fire."

Sviatkovsky was killed when a bullet hit a hand grenade that was on his vest, IDF said. The explosion also wounded the two other soldiers. Peretz was killed in an exchange of fire, IDF said.

[Updated, 4:45 p.m.] The number of Palestinian civilians hurt now stands at eight, local medical sources said. Two of them - including a child - were seriously wounded and two others were moderately wounded, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Hamas said one of its fighters was killed, and it lost contact with another.

[Posted, 1:42 p.m.] Two Israeli soldiers and two Palestinian militants were killed in a gunfight Friday in Gaza, authorities said.

Israel Defense Forces said there was exchange of fire "with terrorists who were planting explosives along the security fence in the Gaza Strip."

Two other soldiers were wounded.

Along with the two Palestinian militant deaths, four Palestinian civilians were hurt, local medical sources said.

The military wing of Hamas, the Palestinian group that controls Gaza, said in a statement that its forces clashed with Israelis near the Khan Yunis area of southern Gaza.

Israel's way of making peace "let us negotiate on your half of the cake while I am eating it". Before you know it, the cake is all swallowed and there is no more cake to talk about.

Yet again Israel blames hamas for the instigation. hamas is planting explosives on their side of land. Israel has no business in gaza. Just like everyother country trying to defend its lands, gaza is doing the same. Israel invaded their land and got what they desreved!

Good! It's about time that the Israelis suffered at the hands of the Palestinians....and why are the Palestinians referred to as "militants" and "terrorists" in this article anyway? Com'on CNN how bias can you be? The Israelis have been terrorizing the Palestinians since since 1953! The Israelis are racists and are doing the same exact thing to the Palestinians as Hitler and the Third Reich did to them: that "security" wall enclosing the Palestinians into a confined area may as well be a Krakow ghetto!

  6. Jibran have to be out of your mind to term people defending their land as "terrorists" . The terrorists are the "soldiers" stealing their lands and occupying their homes.

Hahaha, Israel just had to start some trouble, why come into the 'Palestinian' occupied territory at first... and I give a huge applause of the way the article says 'terrorist', by what I see the ones attempting terrorism / or an act of war, was and always is, Israel..

Sadly, neither Israel nor the Palestinians can simply make peace and stop because of extremism on both sides. The conflict is unsolvable, and will probably last hundreds of years more. Both sides have valid arguments about why they are right. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is here to stay until one of the two sides simply dies or gives up, which doesn't look like it's happening any time soon.

The Palestinians HAVE NOT AMENDED THE ANNIHILATIONIST CLAUSES IN THEIR CHARTER. How Israel can make peace with people that want to destroy it from the map ? The provocation is full and consequently there is endless war

voice4israel thinks my post is one of the most "rediculous" (his spelling not mine) posts he's ever seen? As a response... Is WAS Palestinians land that's why it was called PALESTINE!!!!! And yes, your right it was controlled by british, french etc. but so was almost the whole middle east at one time or another. The truth hurts and you know your close to the truth when people get mad at something you've said like the case with voice4israel over my original post. Israel DOES control every aspect of palestinians life the only time they don't is when doing so would SO inflame world opinion agaisnt them that they let the control go for a second then act like they're doing some big favor when they're only doing what's right in the first place! You want credit for Israel letting the people elect Hamas in a free and fair election??? You also give the example of Israel returning the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt as a sign of good faith...Israel didn't return it, Egypt had to TAKE in back by force in the war of 1973 when Egypt proved through GREAT milatary planning that Israel isn't unbeatable. Check YOUR facts my friend Israel CONTROLLS EVERYTHING that comes and goes from the Gazaz strip and they let almost NOTHING in for the people to rebuild the damage the Israel did in the lastest invasion which killed HOW many innocent people???
