2 Israeli soldiers, 2 Palestinian militants killed in clashes

[Updated, 4:52 p.m.]  Israel Defense Forces identified its dead soldiers as Staff Sgt. Ilan Sviatkovsky and Maj. Eliraz Peretz.

After seeing the "terrorists" plant explosives, IDF moved forward and fired, killing two militants, said Southern Command Maj. Gen. Yoav Galant, according to IDF's Web site.

"The soldiers advanced in a proper operational manner and when the terrorists were seen moving westward, tanks that were stationed undercover opened fire," Galant said, according to IDF's Web site. "One of the terrorists approached the forces point blank and opened fire."

Sviatkovsky was killed when a bullet hit a hand grenade that was on his vest, IDF said. The explosion also wounded the two other soldiers. Peretz was killed in an exchange of fire, IDF said.

[Updated, 4:45 p.m.] The number of Palestinian civilians hurt now stands at eight, local medical sources said. Two of them - including a child - were seriously wounded and two others were moderately wounded, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Hamas said one of its fighters was killed, and it lost contact with another.

[Posted, 1:42 p.m.] Two Israeli soldiers and two Palestinian militants were killed in a gunfight Friday in Gaza, authorities said.

Israel Defense Forces said there was exchange of fire "with terrorists who were planting explosives along the security fence in the Gaza Strip."

Two other soldiers were wounded.

The military wing of Hamas, the Palestinian group that controls Gaza, said in a statement that its forces clashed with Israelis near the Khan Yunis area of southern Gaza.

Great story. The Israelis need to accept world opinion and make peace with the Palestinians, give them back there land, and stop controlling every aspect of their lives. If Israel is as concerned about security as much as they say then doing this would give them the security that no amount of force and control ever can. Israel needs incidents like these so they can justify their illegal and immoral actions.I don't think Israel really wants peace because with peace they can't do the things they've been doing to the Palestinians on a daily basis since before I was even born. The fact that they've bulit a "security" wall when it was their polices that caused the attacks that they're trying to stop prove this. Israel is treating the symptom instead of the disease and that will never, ever fix the problem!

The fight against terrorism goes on. Borders mean nothing to the Palestinians leaders. It is Israel’s existence that they will not tolerate. In 2000, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and again in 2008 Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert proposed borders that were extremely generous. In both cases these offers were refused by the Palestinians, despite the fact that the sacrifices required of Israel may not have passed either the Israeli Knesset or a general referendum.

The fight against terrorism requires victory. Israel needs our help and I am proud to say America has been generous in that area.

The Jews have lamented the loss of their home, the loss of Jerusalem for 3000 years. Even were the U.S. to announce a total military and economic boycott of Israel tomorrow, nothing would induce radical Islamists to lay down arms against America. Radical Islam is at war with the world, including mainstream Muslims who do not think like them. Radical Islam will never be satisfied until “God’s Law” their “Sharia Law” has replaced “Man’s Law” everywhere in the world.

Sharia Law often seems primitive and barbaric to a westerner. We look on with horror and disgust when a "Sharia Law" court sentenced a women to jail and lashes after she had been gang raped. We look on with horror and disgust when a "Sharia Law" court sentenced a man to death for sorcery. When religions ruled our land we also owned our women and we killed witches. Western civilization has grown up, separated the church and the state, and left those horrors behind us. Western civilizations are not the barbarians in today's world, we don't do that anymore, we treat women as equals and we don't kill witches anymore.

Islamic civilization was certainly superior to Western civilization's dark ages and there are Muslims who still think they are better. Radical Islam is trying for force all Muslims into a Sharia Law religiously run state. However, that is not good either for Western or the Islamic civilization in today's world. Sharia Law and the culture it brings appears to train Muslims stupid and stops them from becoming a vibrant effective civilization in TODAY'S world.

The only thing Islamic civilization appears to excel at in today's world is breeding which they believe is their winning formula for taking over the world. Many Muslims believe that once they become 51% of the population they can and will vote in Sharia Law.

It's really sad to say that in this part of the world there will never be peace I wish I can be wrong about this but I'm telling the truth!. How many administations has passed not to mention how many peaceful attempts. Now, you have Hezbolah and Hamas fighting against each other to see who has a stronger edge against Israel. As long as they don't recognize Israel and as long as they continue to shoot rockets, Israel will defend itself no matter who gets involed.

Maybe if you communists would actually stand by your allies instead of sending mixed messages to the entire region like a moody teenage girl this conflict might have a chance of ending this century. If you any of think you that the right thing for Israel to do is to sit there and get hammered by blood thirsty insurgents on all sides and not defend itself, congratulations, you are a terrorist-loving hippie.

Too bad the world doesn't see that Hamas keeps attacks Israel and no one says anything. But when Israel DEFENDS itself, she is committing "war crimes".
By the way, they were Terrorists, not Militants – BIG difference.

Just my opinion... but maybe if Palestine was properly and appropriately regarded as a nation – with a real capital and the right to assemble a regular army – then the question of "civilian" vs. "militant" vs. "terrorist" would dissolve. I mean, let's at least have a fair fight here...
