2 Israeli soldiers, 2 Palestinian militants killed in clashes

[Updated, 4:52 p.m.]  Israel Defense Forces identified its dead soldiers as Staff Sgt. Ilan Sviatkovsky and Maj. Eliraz Peretz.

After seeing the "terrorists" plant explosives, IDF moved forward and fired, killing two militants, said Southern Command Maj. Gen. Yoav Galant, according to IDF's Web site.

"The soldiers advanced in a proper operational manner and when the terrorists were seen moving westward, tanks that were stationed undercover opened fire," Galant said, according to IDF's Web site. "One of the terrorists approached the forces point blank and opened fire."

Sviatkovsky was killed when a bullet hit a hand grenade that was on his vest, IDF said. The explosion also wounded the two other soldiers. Peretz was killed in an exchange of fire, IDF said.

[Updated, 4:45 p.m.] The number of Palestinian civilians hurt now stands at eight, local medical sources said. Two of them - including a child - were seriously wounded and two others were moderately wounded, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Hamas said one of its fighters was killed, and it lost contact with another.

[Posted, 1:42 p.m.] Two Israeli soldiers and two Palestinian militants were killed in a gunfight Friday in Gaza, authorities said.

Israel Defense Forces said there was exchange of fire "with terrorists who were planting explosives along the security fence in the Gaza Strip."

Two other soldiers were wounded.

The military wing of Hamas, the Palestinian group that controls Gaza, said in a statement that its forces clashed with Israelis near the Khan Yunis area of southern Gaza.

Hamas hasn't attacked until now and a few weeks ago. All the other attacks from Gaza are from more extreme groups...

Hamas is a resistance force that fights against occupation, they may use violent means just as Israel uses violent means. If Israel stops their occupation and make just peace, Hamas will seize to exist beacause the palestinian people will not need it anymore......

sad situation. both parties are at fault here. we cant condemn hamas for terrorist and be ok with state terrorism committed by Israel. Both parties should be held responsible in international court.

there is no doubt that the jewish people if Israel should rightfully defend themselves. The Palenstinian authority has done nothing to provide education to its people. The real oppresors is ironically the same dumb radical muslims in control of Hamas. Burn them down and I hate to say it but Israel should exterminate them all or at least give the palenstians an opportunity to immigrate to Israel and become tax paying citizens. That probably wont happen considering how little their own leaders deny them opportunities to see outside of the "radical muslim" box. The audacity of any muslim to claim any part of israel their own is appaling.

The resistance in Gaza will not stop, until Israel abides by international law. Israel the known war criminals can no longer play victim to frivolous accusations. The support for Israel has fallen, when the US finally cuts their 3 BILLION in annual aid to Israel, Israel wil be forced to take the peaceful route and stop claiming / stealing land.

Terrorists and freedom fighters are the same thing, it just depends on which side of the fence you are viewing them. When the Mujahideen were kicking Russian ass in Afghanistan with US support, they were freedom fighters. Now that they are fighting the Americans, they are terrorists. So all you morons who keep splashing the terrorist label on everything should realize that you are just viewing things from the wrong side.

Now let's look at Israel and Palestine. Imagine that the British government decided to give half your country away to Muslims. How they hell would you react to that? Well that is exactly what happened to the Palestinians. The British government split Palestine in half, and gave half the land to create the state of Israel. Hamas and its freedom fighters are trying to regain their homeland. Any single person on this board would do the same thing. So don't defend Israel without first being honest enough to realize that you would be fighting tooth and nail against them if you were in Palestine's situation.

9 years of Rockets fired into Israel has caused 12 deaths

Israel has killed well over 1500 people alone in Gaza mostly civilians in the past 2years and near 1000 people in Lebanon in 2006. Who is the victims?

if not for anti-semitism, those soldiers would be alive. maybe if CNN had carried more coverage of the rocket attacks, this would pressure the Palestinians to back down instead of encouraging them to take up arms. to the families and friends of the soldiers...if you never forgive its ok.

This happened IN GAZA! Not in Israel. Hamas operatives were planting explosives on THEIR SIDE of the fence. If the Israelis had no intention of crossing into Gaza it wouldnot have been a problem.

Unfortunately for the two israeli soldiers killed they got gutsy and crossed the border and got what they deserved. I would expect the same if it were Palestinians crossing into Israel. ... but then it wouldnt even make the news ... now would it?

Mr. Colbridge just posted one of the more rediculous comments I've read on walls like these ever. First you say that Israel needs to "give them back there land". Firstly, it would be "their land". Secondly, the Palestinians never had any land. There was never a Palestinian controlled area. It was British, or Syrian, or Ottoman, or Egyptian etc. Next, Israel does not control every aspect of Palestinian life. Example A: Do you think that Israel would have allowed Hamas to take control? Answer: NO!
Not sure what you are basing your theory on Israel not wanting peace on. Did Israel not give back the Sinai Peninsula for peace? Did it not withdraw from Gaza?

    Four terrorists dead. Good!

We need to cut ALL ties with the terrorist nation of Israel. Let them fight their wars on their own.
