2 Israeli soldiers, 2 Palestinian militants killed in clashes

[Updated, 4:52 p.m.]  Israel Defense Forces identified its dead soldiers as Staff Sgt. Ilan Sviatkovsky and Maj. Eliraz Peretz.

After seeing the "terrorists" plant explosives, IDF moved forward and fired, killing two militants, said Southern Command Maj. Gen. Yoav Galant, according to IDF's Web site.

"The soldiers advanced in a proper operational manner and when the terrorists were seen moving westward, tanks that were stationed undercover opened fire," Galant said, according to IDF's Web site. "One of the terrorists approached the forces point blank and opened fire."

Sviatkovsky was killed when a bullet hit a hand grenade that was on his vest, IDF said. The explosion also wounded the two other soldiers. Peretz was killed in an exchange of fire, IDF said.

[Updated, 4:45 p.m.] The number of Palestinian civilians hurt now stands at eight, local medical sources said. Two of them - including a child - were seriously wounded and two others were moderately wounded, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Hamas said one of its fighters was killed, and it lost contact with another.

[Posted, 1:42 p.m.] Two Israeli soldiers and two Palestinian militants were killed in a gunfight Friday in Gaza, authorities said.

Israel Defense Forces said there was exchange of fire "with terrorists who were planting explosives along the security fence in the Gaza Strip."

Two other soldiers were wounded.

Yes if you use the type of weapon that Israel has been using you are committing war crimes.

We cannot accept biological weapons like the fosfor etc that affects everyone, that is a crime call it defence but it is an offence.

And probably yes Hamas attacs "Israel” or if you like to see it that way, Palestinian land that is currently occupied by Israel. Rockets... that need to be noted... have attacked Land that belongs to Palestine I am talking of the part that the UN and International community etc has assigned for the Palestinian state.

Still does Israel continue to build on such land how can you call that defence.

So please... they should stop building on this land first, before complaining... because otherwise does this complaint seem like propaganda which is probably is.

The palestinians are considered native to the land of Palestine. Israeli's want to remove the Palestinians from their homeland at no cost to becoming Israel the jewish state. Everyone agrees in wanting peace in that part of the world but the true fact is removing people from their homeland is WRONG. This will stop when our US tax dollars stop funding this idea. The world is slowly understanding this and will not support hate of one people over the other. God Bless – David

The world sees but the world is afraid. The world is simply terrified by terrorists. Most of the countries are afraid. They don't want to be in the same situation than Israel. They are loosing freedom of expression mostly because of fear. Israel is standing up against all these threats without fear. The US have a tradition to stand up as well. I admire this courage.

The Palestinian problem is an Arab problem and it could be solved if the many time defeated countries surrounding Israel choose Peace and not violence. In 1948, before the war with Israel, Gaza belonged to Egypt. Today it should be again part of Egypt. Jordan is mostly inhabited by Arab Palestinians. A peace treaty with Israel could allow the Arab Palestinians to merge their territories with Jordan. When someone wants peace there is always a creative solution.

By the way, the Arabs citizens of Israel are Israelis. They are active and respected. Some are doctors in hospitals, etc. They are not afraid to speak or to be among Israelis Jews or Christians. But Jews risk their life if they find themselves in the Arab territories or in some Arab Countries.

Gaza should not fight Israel, Israel is no more in Gaza. The question that should be asked is the following: Why Egypt doesn't want to take back Gaza?

Stop bashing Israel for defending herself. All of your haters in Europe are cowards as you are afraid of all the arabs in your own country. 99% of the terrorist in the world are arab and/or muslim. More so, most of the world's conflicts are caused by terrorist muslims. Furthermore, when ever Israel trades for the relerase of capture Jews, they have to release thousands of terrorist arabs for 1 person which is sickening to say the least. The negotiators apparently value terrorist more.

Hamas is a terrorist organization and the Palestinians do NOT want peace! Viva Israel!

I think it's high time Israel just end the problem by pushing all the palestinians occupying Gaza into Egypt and be done with it.

Coolbridge you really need to get a clue about the mideast and the opportunities the pals had to achieve peace which they continue to resist and will until Israel is destroyed. Plus if you studied any history, you'd know there wasn't any pals until Arafat's Grandfather since they are and were Arabs mostly from Jordan.

As a citizen of israel i want to tell you , the reader:

we never came running and made parties when the other side , were injured or dying, israel people have still not losing it totatly. i am also very sad to live on this part where peace is not present ,
the only thing you can do as a withness to this story is not to boycott israel but to try and analyze the facts that as astate, israel cannot agree with terror ttacks, as for the politics, everyone living here, knows it is complicated and that power and money are giving the tone, to us the israeli it is not a pride or a joy to live in such a country, you should all take in mind that in every other place, the strong stide would be much volgar and less patient, try to imagine the world war 2...therefore,next time when u drink ur coffee please try to understand we are only flash and blood like you , the world must change its own view toward israel as it watched in tv and news today

There will never be peace in Israel when Hamas controls the majority of the Palestinians and especially when you have Iran supplying them with weapons and bulding nuclear weapons. Its sad to say things are only going to get worse

What haunts me is that when an israeli kills a palestinian, its justice. yet when a palestinian kills an israeli, its terrorism. why not focus on reality? these two type of people fight for what they believe is right. palestinians fight for the land that is being taken away and israelis have the power to take it from them being allies to america(a strong nation). Why dont anyone go there personally and find out who the real "terrorists" are? instead of talking smack of what you dont know personally? anyone who kills for power or unjust reasons are terrorists.

Give the Jews their paintings and everything else they claim belongs to them and they will surely give the palestinians their land back. After all it was stolen from them.
