2 Israeli soldiers, 2 Palestinian militants killed in clashes

[Updated, 4:52 p.m.]  Israel Defense Forces identified its dead soldiers as Staff Sgt. Ilan Sviatkovsky and Maj. Eliraz Peretz.

After seeing the "terrorists" plant explosives, IDF moved forward and fired, killing two militants, said Southern Command Maj. Gen. Yoav Galant, according to IDF's Web site.

"The soldiers advanced in a proper operational manner and when the terrorists were seen moving westward, tanks that were stationed undercover opened fire," Galant said, according to IDF's Web site. "One of the terrorists approached the forces point blank and opened fire."

Sviatkovsky was killed when a bullet hit a hand grenade that was on his vest, IDF said. The explosion also wounded the two other soldiers. Peretz was killed in an exchange of fire, IDF said.

[Updated, 4:45 p.m.] The number of Palestinian civilians hurt now stands at eight, local medical sources said. Two of them - including a child - were seriously wounded and two others were moderately wounded, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Hamas said one of its fighters was killed, and it lost contact with another.

[Posted, 1:42 p.m.] Two Israeli soldiers and two Palestinian militants were killed in a gunfight Friday in Gaza, authorities said.

Israel Defense Forces said there was exchange of fire "with terrorists who were planting explosives along the security fence in the Gaza Strip."

Two other soldiers were wounded.

Along with the two Palestinian militant deaths, four Palestinian civilians were hurt, local medical sources said.

The military wing of Hamas, the Palestinian group that controls Gaza, said in a statement that its forces clashed with Israelis near the Khan Yunis area of southern Gaza.

The anti-Israel lobby seems to conveniently forget that every time Israel extends a hand to Palestine, the trust relationship is exploited to perpetuate terror attacks against soft Jewish targets, civilians. There is no security in a partnership with Israel, only a build up of resistance against Israel which Palestinians have and continue to attempt to reclaim. Any and everything the Palestinians do and have done, is towards the future goal of re-conquering all of Palestine in the name of their faith. Pure and simple. I dare the anti-Israel lobby in U.S. and Europe to spend a month under the scrutiny of Arab rule and a week under Jewish rule, and soon there would be no anti-Israel lobby. These people are living in an illusion in which they have not direct contextual experience and are under the influence of a political propaganda movement to one illegitimate Israel and two destabilize U.S. alliances in the M.E. and central Asia.

Its really a shame 4 human beings had to die over racism and religion. This is why Religion needs to be separated from State.

If we talk simply about Arabs from Jordan, Jordanians, the problem could be resolved. We have to be true to history.

until Jews and synagogues are fairly represented in rural and small town USA (and i can say with reasonable certainty there is a almost total lack thereof) then anti-semitism is one of our proudest achievements (i hope you can see the sarcasm lol) and greatest contributions to the history of mankind (lol).

ok. all of you americans, who were growned and edjucated on some opinions, listen and listen well: 1.Israelis has rights on israel just like arabs do.
2.Israelis who build houses in Jerusalem are not criminals. it isn't actually a crime at all. (just like we are not disallowing arabs to build.

3.what happened in Gaza was a huge mass killing, and OLMERT should be punished for it. but it doesn't mean that we are all like OLMERT,

4.everytime you think something about israel think twice "is it what i have been lectured in my childhood? is it really the truth?

Israel will prevail always!!! If Hamas starts a fight this time in the Gaza, you will see the end of the Gaza as you know it today.

This was an arranged ambush by Hamas activists (uh, terrorists). No blame on Israel, no nothing. Hamas have no "militants", they have terrorists.

Before you state your opinion in public check your facts.
Before you believe your facts authorize them.
But most important of all, make sure you're even qualified to speak. Even though its just another talk-back in a news channel.

If the world were an eye, then Israel would be the Iris, and Jerusalem the pupil. And so the war continues....

Palestinians were planting the bomb in their own territory? Why did the Israelis shoot them? Israelis are just as much 'terrorists' as Hamas. The only difference is that the Israelis have the fancy American tax payer paid weapons. It enrages me that my hard earned money is going to pay for the support of these barbaric pseudo nation.

What is done is done. Move on People. If Palestinians were really like by other Arab countries including Syria they would help them or accept them as citizens ( In their real land) but everuone knows the real character of Palestinians. Constantly putting up shows to show the world they are suffering or civilians are being killed. The fact is that the civilians are mostly terrorists with guns and most of the time children and women are used as human shield. The whole thing is a show.
They do not what a Palestinian state or peace, they want the Jews out of Middle East. This will never happen. So brace yourselves for another 100 years of hate and war.
Amazing that people will fight over a piece of land that is really their final resting place.

I am sick of it. It's always been that the Israelis take deliberate actions to provoke the Palestinians and other Arabs. When the other side reacts to it, Israel uses the words like "right to survive" or "terrorist" to blind the real issues, and take lands and kill Arabs (even Americans) with no abandon. The more I see Israeli's actions the more I understand where the Book of Revelation comes from.

In summary the root cause of all evil = Religion and Religious nuts. Don't hijack the US to satisfy your goals. You can not cover up oppression by quoting biblical texts. Let's start by giving the Palestinians their dignity. None of the patronizing BS about being generous and giving them a little extra land. Do not patronize them with the Askenaz mind set. If the Israelis consider themselves the chosen tribe, I've got news for you, a lot of different people around the world consider themselves chosen as well. There is room for a fair and free Israel. The more you oppress the more insecure the future will be. The indignities are not forgotten by the younger generation. You should look at the Brits (creators of Israel). They were never secure treating the Irish like dirt. Their armies couldn't stop Irish nationalism.

All I have to say is that I am sorry for the deaths of innocent people on both sides. Does anyone think of the people that get caught in the cross-fire? As an American, I could not imagine a world where I had to fight for my home everyday. I have watched footage of the fighting in Gaza. It is heartbreaking to see such violence in people. For the sake of the civilians, the violence needs to stop. Can't you just agree to disagree and split the land?
