2 Israeli soldiers, 2 Palestinian militants killed in clashes

[Updated, 4:52 p.m.]  Israel Defense Forces identified its dead soldiers as Staff Sgt. Ilan Sviatkovsky and Maj. Eliraz Peretz.

After seeing the "terrorists" plant explosives, IDF moved forward and fired, killing two militants, said Southern Command Maj. Gen. Yoav Galant, according to IDF's Web site.

"The soldiers advanced in a proper operational manner and when the terrorists were seen moving westward, tanks that were stationed undercover opened fire," Galant said, according to IDF's Web site. "One of the terrorists approached the forces point blank and opened fire."

Sviatkovsky was killed when a bullet hit a hand grenade that was on his vest, IDF said. The explosion also wounded the two other soldiers. Peretz was killed in an exchange of fire, IDF said.

Meanwhile, Hamas said one of its fighters was killed, and it lost contact with another.

Despite years of the Israeli Lobby in the US and suppression of critical discussion in the USA that actually takes place in the Israeli press. After decades of propaganda and manipulation some TRUTH has drifted through....amazing

    For anyone who says:

Israel is democratic: what is democratic about occupying the west bank for over 40 years. restiricting movement of ordinary people, humiliate people at hundreds of check points, trespassing their cities, villages, and homes, and destroying their farmlands. Allowing settlers to carry weapons and attack palestinians farms and homes.

Palestinians do not exist: how about the millions of living palestinians who have birth certificates, land and home titles in Haifa, Jafa, Nazarret, Jerusalem, Hebron, and all of west bank (Are they ghosts!!!!!)

Palestinians only know violence; how would you act if you were unjustly stripped of your home and land and jailed in the land you were born in and sent to refugee camps, and you are constantly told you should leave your own land!!!!

It seems that in every part of the world, on every continent, Muslims are responsible for the killings of civilians. In Africa, where they've murdered over 2 million christians, in Asia and Russia, in Europe, and certainly in the Middle East. I mean, geeze, they even can't stop murdering other Muslims! They even glory in the murder of Muslim boys and girls! We all know it, though we are often to politically correct to say it out loud – the Muslim religion in barbaric and blood thirsty.

God bless their souls.I was very pleased reading most of the comments.I am a Palestinian and i didn't think that the american world has the knowledge and knows exactly whats going on. To my friend who said terrorists are always Arabs or and Muslims. my friend go read a book not all Arabs are Muslims and i dare you to get me 1 Arab Christian that was involved in any violent act? i do believe Hamas doesn't want peace but i wouldn't call them terrorists after all its their land and they are trying to take it back.

i doubt that peace will ever be here in the middle east.Even if the land is settled there will be no peace. Palestinian country what about the 3+ million refugee outside ? you going to take them back? i think its all talk to keep people optimistic and quiet.

israel, wherever you go, what ever you do, your very nature reveals itself. and whenever it does, the result will always be the same. you will be hunted. and you always get your just reward. it has always been so throughout history. and next time it will be the same. it is your destiny. so it is you that will destroy yourself, and blame it on someone else. you will never have peace, because it is human nature not to have peace with the devil.

Israel administers Jeruselum as an international city where all people of the Abrahamic Faiths are welcome to make pilgrimages, pray, and have processions. The only place in Jeruselum where this is not true is on the grounds of the Temple Mount where Islamists will assault and remove anyone displaying any religious faith other than Islam. Most of the Islamists, and especially Hamas, insist that all non-muslims must be banned from all of the holy land of Jeruselum. Islamists are also adamant that all the world must submit to Sharia law, that is their stated goal. As long as there are people who understand and respect co-existence, there will be Islamist that will threaten them. IDF fights for freedom of all, Hamas fights for Islamic domination.

It is a pity, how the world is looking for a solution in the wrong place. It takes 2 to make love and piece.
No one in the world can not say that Israel wants to make piece with it's neighbors. When Egypt wanted to have piece – there is piece between the Egypt and Israel. When Jordan wanted to have piece – there is piece between Jordan and Israel.
BUT – the Palestinian – they do not want to have piece. They want to donations from the world. After so much money which was given to then, they did not build even one hospital. Every time, they come to Israel that will help them.
Israel supply electricity, water, money food – to Gaza. What does it receive in return – rockets!! Are you willing to live over 10 years when every day some one is firing rockets over your house?? So far over 10,000 rockets have been shoot over Israel. Did any one told the Palestinians to stop firing? Israel is OUT of Gaza. Israel should protect it self like any other country in the world.
It is so easy to say that Israel is the one to blame.
I guess if you are not here – you will NEVER understands it.

9-11 and the trillions of dollars spent on the war on terror is basically because of the US support of Israel. Since Israel is not interested in giving the palistinians a fair deal or having peace, the Arabs, who totally surround Israel and outnumber them, will eventually get their stuff together and destroy Israel. It will be Israel's fault.

When the Jews revolted in the Warsaw Ghetto they were considered heros. When Hamas revolts in the Gaza Ghetto they are considered Terrorists. Please explain why? Are they not similarly treated?

Why has the UN not issued a condemnation note addressing the admittance of Hamas that they wanted to kidnap a soldier? Why is the world blind to the fact that people hat Jews and Israel? Why is Israel the only country in the world that is asked to give back land that they win in wars? It's too bad that civilians on both sides get killed, but it's also too bad that Arab propoganda is so good. Long live peace, long live Israel, long live freedom. By the way, ten percent of the Israeli parliament is Arab. There is no chance that an Arab country would have any jews in their parliament.

    @Monzi:
It is not about land, it is about existence. Hamas doesn't recognize Israel's right to exist. Read their charter, it is no secret and no joke. They simply are not going to tolerate a Jewish state in the Middle East, in any form and in any borders.
