2 Israeli soldiers, 2 Palestinian militants killed in clashes

[Updated, 4:52 p.m.]  Israel Defense Forces identified its dead soldiers as Staff Sgt. Ilan Sviatkovsky and Maj. Eliraz Peretz.

After seeing the "terrorists" plant explosives, IDF moved forward and fired, killing two militants, said Southern Command Maj. Gen. Yoav Galant, according to IDF's Web site.

"The soldiers advanced in a proper operational manner and when the terrorists were seen moving westward, tanks that were stationed undercover opened fire," Galant said, according to IDF's Web site. "One of the terrorists approached the forces point blank and opened fire."

Sviatkovsky was killed when a bullet hit a hand grenade that was on his vest, IDF said. The explosion also wounded the two other soldiers. Peretz was killed in an exchange of fire, IDF said.

[Updated, 4:45 p.m.] The number of Palestinian civilians hurt now stands at eight, local medical sources said. Two of them - including a child - were seriously wounded and two others were moderately wounded, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Hamas said one of its fighters was killed, and it lost contact with another.

[Posted, 1:42 p.m.] Two Israeli soldiers and two Palestinian militants were killed in a gunfight Friday in Gaza, authorities said.

Israel Defense Forces said there was exchange of fire "with terrorists who were planting explosives along the security fence in the Gaza Strip."

Two other soldiers were wounded.

Along with the two Palestinian militant deaths, four Palestinian civilians were hurt, local medical sources said.

The military wing of Hamas, the Palestinian group that controls Gaza, said in a statement that its forces clashed with Israelis near the Khan Yunis area of southern Gaza.

The killings of the innocent is not justified on either side. But, Israel is and has been breaking international law and needs to live up to the responsibility of being a humane nation. Finally, with Obama in the office, the U.S. has a president that recognizes how the Israeli government is embarrassing their supporters. Maybe this time the Israelis control of the media might not be able to cover up there most recent mistakes but judging by this article and the comments, it doesn't look like that will happen.

Isreal is an xtreme terrorist / greedy state which has killed countless numbers of journalists, and peace core members by accident. Just by being in Palestine, you may get killed by IDF for doing nothing. I am outraged and disgusted

Let's not pretend that there will ever be peace in whatever you call this area. Hamas will never stop fighting. Even if all israelis gave up and went away somewhere, hamas wouldn't be content; they would just keep killing – fellow palestinians if there is nobody else around. It's just what they do! So Israel – go ahead and double up on them walls! It seems to be working... like a zoo.

hamas uses woman and children as human shields and then cry for international outrage when they are killed. They also use hospitals, schools and mosques as bases and to store weapons. these are things that the goldstone report failed to mention. nothing will or should change unitl they recognize Israel's right to resist.

Isael Government and israeli people must accept the UN resolutions for peace in the middle east. Two independent states living side by side as neighbourgs is a very good solution. They must stop saying that jews have been building Jerusalem 3000 years ago. As an historian, I woud say that the people who occupy Israel today is not the same peolpe who lived Israel 3000 years ago. Why Natanyahu can not accept wisdom advice Hilary Cliton gave him about Moses when he was conducting jews from egypt to Israel through the Desert?

Please, please, someone explain to me why the quotation marks around the bomb-planting "terrorists" are being used by this "objective" "journalist" who wrote this "news report" published by this """"""non-biased"""""" source of "reliable" "information".

    Sincerely,
    A "fan"

Annexing land, forcing people into ghettoes, claiming to be The Chosen People, using collective punishment of civilians (1,400 Palestinian children killed since September 2000). Does Israel remind anyone else of 1930s Germany? No wonder they were South Africa's only weapons supplier during the global sanctions era of apartheid!

Israel is not a country, its a UN backed occupation of Palestinian Land, now interestingly in US religion and state is separated, then why did US help jews snatch land from Palestinians on the religious beliefs and Proficies of jews? Hypocrisy at its best!

Question 1: Why the quotation marks around terrorists? If they're planting explosives (and it's easy to see in today's visual surveillance systems), they're certainly not civilians. I heard Yoav Galant talking and his words did not imply any quotation marks.
Question 2: What undercover tanks? Tanks are by definition not undercover.. you can't hide a 60+ tons of metal "under cover"..

    Cheers,
    Guy

i encourage any person who wants to comment on the current situation in israel to spend a week in gaza with hamas and a week in any part of israel near the border with gaza and soon enough your naive idealism will wither away and the reality will become self- evident. this is not about an occupation or a religious war. in gaza there are factions of terrorist organizations which are funded and armed by iran and want nothing to do with a peace settlement they turn a population of citizens into hostages and human shields forcibly under threat of death to them and their families and will never stop to do the one thing they were created so successfully to do, which is destroy life, society, love, and the american influence in the middle east both zionist jew and christian westerner alike. hamas itself was formed by radical muslims from around the middle east who moved into gaza just to wage this fight.

wow, I can't believe that the Israelis haven't reacted yet...
they are maybe the only country in the world besides us that really wants to stop the terror, and the world is boycotting them... how sad,
that radical Islam controls the world- See Great Britain,

    God Bless Israel,

I agree with William Colbridge. My understanding the country Israel itself is a Paestanian Land, it's not a matter of religion but a matter of identity.. Palestanians are not only Muslim, they have Christians and Jews within them Like Yemen. Some writers in here either very much biased towards Israel, some Palestanians. Israel was born as the result of the Nazi atrocities. The people rejected by Europe form Israel, formed the nation Isarel and kicked out the native Palestanians and pls don't bring religion here. Pls don's say like Benjamin Natinyaho about Biblical reference of for the last 3000 years Israelis are living there. The most of the current Israelis are the decendants of the Europeans and the other countries where Jewish populations lived for centuries. What Isarel is doing is promoting Terrorism itself. Because of its occupation and attrocities in the last few decades, Hamas, Hisbullah were formed and they are getting stronger everyday. Israel is not favouring itself by bringing crisis with USA. For mere 3000 or 5000 houses which will house 20000 people only, Israeli government want to be in power, bring instability in peace process, bringing relational gap with USA, allowing Iran to build it's Nuclear arsenal (???). Occupying Iraq and hanging a lame dictator Saddam Hussain with no WMD, Israel and the west made the biggest mistake, leaving Iran with no opposition. Pls don't tell me about how many people Saddam killed like we the west are the innocent ones. We people in the west have Islamophobia as like Hiroshima and Nagashaki was done by Muslims!!! First World War, Second World War, Korean War, Vietnam War was done by Muslims!!!!! Because that west created Osama B L and his terrorist group done the atrocity in USA and the sucide bombings and all this current killing made all Muslims are teerorists>>> People, look at the world political atmosphere the muslim world are facing more atrocities as a result of 9/11 and many Muslim countries are unstable now like Iraq, Afganistan, Pakistan allowing Frankenstein like Iran growing up and will be ready to strike soon if Israel and we the west bring stability in the Palestanian land and ofcouse Two nation solution in reality. Regards.
