2 Israeli soldiers, 2 Palestinian militants killed in clashes

[Updated, 4:52 p.m.]  Israel Defense Forces identified its dead soldiers as Staff Sgt. Ilan Sviatkovsky and Maj. Eliraz Peretz.

After seeing the "terrorists" plant explosives, IDF moved forward and fired, killing two militants, said Southern Command Maj. Gen. Yoav Galant, according to IDF's Web site.

"The soldiers advanced in a proper operational manner and when the terrorists were seen moving westward, tanks that were stationed undercover opened fire," Galant said, according to IDF's Web site. "One of the terrorists approached the forces point blank and opened fire."

Sviatkovsky was killed when a bullet hit a hand grenade that was on his vest, IDF said. The explosion also wounded the two other soldiers. Peretz was killed in an exchange of fire, IDF said.

[Updated, 4:45 p.m.] The number of Palestinian civilians hurt now stands at eight, local medical sources said. Two of them - including a child - were seriously wounded and two others were moderately wounded, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Hamas said one of its fighters was killed, and it lost contact with another.

[Posted, 1:42 p.m.] Two Israeli soldiers and two Palestinian militants were killed in a gunfight Friday in Gaza, authorities said.

Israel Defense Forces said there was exchange of fire "with terrorists who were planting explosives along the security fence in the Gaza Strip."

Two other soldiers were wounded.

The military wing of Hamas, the Palestinian group that controls Gaza, said in a statement that its forces clashed with Israelis near the Khan Yunis area of southern Gaza.

To those thinking Israel will not fail! I beg to differ, Israel has been failing. At the hands of the determined resistance from south Lebanon, Israel suffered its first defeat and will never be capable of redeeming itself. At war, the most committed wins. He who fears death, and fights for a paycheck, can never write history. The blood of those who sacrifice their lives for a just cause will dictate history at the end. Israel's military might can no longer improve. Or at least, it can not cause any more damage and/or deaths than it has done the last half decade. On the other hand, the resistance will gain strength over time. Maybe not in a year or two; but surely, in another decade or two or three, and perhaps a century, there will be little difference between the destruction capabilities of the resistance and that of Israel. That will later shift the balance of power in the region, because Arabs are accustomed to aggression at the hands of the arrogant Zionists but Zionists will flee at the first sign of escalation. Only then will the reverse Zionist movement take effect and the illegal occupants of Palestine will be too scared to stay and will leave the whole country behind for the genuine owners of the land. The day the first high rise building in Tel Aviv is destroyed by a resistance missile, the population of Israel will drop by about 20%. And thats when justice starts taking its long awaited course.

The muslims have lamented the loss of their home, the loss of Jerusalem in 1948 . Even were the U.S. to announce a total military and economic boycott of hammas tomorrow, nothing would induce radical jewish and fanatic jews to stop expanding and inlegal settelments,. Radical jewsih and zionists is at war with the world, with progress and with the good jewsih people. including the out to space prime minister who thinks that Telaviv is not a capital!? but jerusalem is!!. Radical jews and zionists will never be satisfied until “God’s Law” their “rise of the temple of mount” and zionists protocols has replaced “Man’s Law” everywhere in the world.

zionists Law often seems primitive and barbaric to a westerner and arabic a like. We look on with horror and disgust when zionist declear the capital is not telaviv!!" . We look on with horror and disgust when a israel prisoned venono a nuclear tech of speaking out the truth! they do not want the truth as they are the killer of jesus our lord, When zionist mixed with radical jewish ruled israel the other side (mulsims and arab including arabic christeans ) must defend there land as the cannanite lands was there before the jewsih and moses arrive. . Western civilization has grown up, separated the church and the state, and left those horrors behind us so why israel dont seperate zionist, radical jewsih from the state!? how many rassian hookers in the holly land ask israel police thousend of sex slave from russia entered israel no body talk about the AIDS AND STD and other diseases in israel our holly land!? it is like saddom and gamore when the jews refused to listen to LOT and God destroyed them, Islamic civilization was certainly superior to Western civilization's dark ages and still better in moral and spirtual ways as they preserve the commandments better than the jews, The jewsih think they are the chosen people!? chosen for what > they still think they are chosen and better and they forgot that they were chosen when moses where among them but then they got lost so they are losen people and ideal and not chosen. . Radical zion is trying toforce all jwish into a a brain wash state where zionist tell and jew must listen!? . However, that is not good either for Western or the Islamic civilization in today's world. Szionists and the culture it brings appears to train jewsih from becoming a vibrant effective civilization in TODAY'S world.

not all muslims need the shariaa low there is God low and the same God for all he is God of Abraham and moses and mohammad and jesus and all other good men no body is chosen and all are children of the one creator.

All this fighting and terrorism is the result of the United Nations which includes the United States in helping to create a Jewish state in a vote on November, 1947 and made it official on May 14, 1948. The Arab’s was robbed of their land but no one ever acknowledge this fact. Just think what would the United State do if some other nation took a piece of our land, would we just sit idle and do nothing? I don’t think so.

I do not understand why the world needs another Arabic state that will be heaven for the terrorists. Gaza is a precise model of this state – Hamas ruled barbarians with the only agenda to obliterate its neighboring state. US already spent trillions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Why to create another nest for the terrorists?

Can we even start to understand a Muslim terrorist?
They kill with boms their own in the streets of Bagdad. Do they care about the lives of people in Gaza? The holy war (Jihad) is above all and thank Allah for the virgins in heaven.

It's Amazing that most CNN readers side with the Palestinians, yet have no clue what is going on. Muslim countries own 99% of the land in the Middle East, Israel has 1%. They also outnumber Israel 500 Million to 7 Million. The Koran states for the Muslims to destroy the Jews. Look it up yourself. Google Jews in the Koran. This has nothing to do with the Palestinians. Muslims just use them as a pawn. If Muslims really cared about the Palestinians, Jordan would re-absorb them and the situation would be over.

As Golda Meir once said, "We will have peace when Arabs love their children more than they hate us."
The Palestinians need to be educated for peace, not violence. I feel that Israel is ready for a two-state solution, but the Palestinians need to be able to govern themselves and create the proper infrastructure. It is possible for us to live side by side securely, but it's probably years away. The Palestinians aren't ready for peace yet. They "never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity."

I love how this article repeatedly mentions the eight Palestinians killed, but fails to mention the thousands of Israeli citizens that were and are being murdered and injured due to the rockets and missiles that Palestinians fire from Gaza. Israel has the right to defend its people and must do so in every way possible. The terrorists were planting explosives with the intention to murder Israelis. Israel acted correctly in the way that she dealt with them.

In response to David # 14 who said "I mean, let's at least have a fair fight here..."

I guess you never heard the saying, "All's fair in love and war."

Obama administration is harming our national interest. He first apologized to the Arab and Muslim world on behalf of the United Stated. WRONG DECISION. Then he bowed down and kissed hands of Saudi King. Now he is bashing Israel.
Arabs are laughing at us now. They are sitting back enjoying the president of USA bashing its long best loyal ally. Now they are strengthening their position against us. Meanwhile Iran is building a nuclear weapon plants each month. Who looks like a fool now?
I always believe Peace will come when Arabs love their children more than hating Jews. That what its all about. This peace is a sham and everyone knows it.
We are paying for mistakes of Jimmy Carter made in 1979. Next generation will pay for the mistakes of President Obama.

People give isreal the benekit of the doubt becaus they have official government.
this is what the palistinians are denied.
we want to blame the palestinians for being ruled by "militants" when they have been denied anything else.
Many would be suprised to find that many isreali's understand this very well.
we must support the right of people to live in peace, including the isrealis, instead of living under governments that foment and plot conflicts.

There is a very simple formula that the Islamic society follows. Increase your demographic percentage in every country through a very high fertility rate. Once you become 20% or above, ask for a separate state. Slowly but steadily, over a period of 300-400 years all countries will have Islamic majority. Islamists don't mind waiting since they feel they are moving towards the ultimate goal. What seem secular societies to us today appear claustrophobic non-sharia infidels to islamists. No amount of convincing will turn them secular. There is only one solution – all other religions have to keep their fertility rates high too.

Good job by Palestinian resistance Force, Israeli terrorists should be killed like this on daily basis. This is the only way to leash a terrorist state.

Israel has killed 1,400 Palestinian children over the past 9 years. You won't hear that on Fox News (might upset all the pro-lifers).
